Submission + - SnapChat turns down 3 Billion offer from Facebook (wsj.com) 1

Dr Herbert West writes: For those who don't know, the way Snapchat works is that you send a message—text photo, whatever—to a friend or group of friends. But instead of the message being persistent, it "disappears" rather quickly. The young 'uns like it because it's a superior method of sexting that doesn't leave yourself open to incriminating pictures of yourself circulating online.

The general consensus is that it's a mistake to turn down the offer since Snapchat has no revenue and doesn't seem like a promising ad service... but possibly the 23 year old founder may have felt that a threatening acquisition would ruin the platform (think Flickr and Yahoo).

Submission + - Tech's Greatest Flip-Floppers (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: In 2010, Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp told the Los Angeles Times that he found advertising so objectionable that 'It really turns our stomachs.' Three years later, after being acquired by Yahoo, Karp was a bit more solicitous, telling an audience of ad execs at Cannes 'You guys are more talented than anyone in the Tumblr office or in Palo Alto or Sunnyvale.' Karp certainly isn't the first tech exec to change his tune. Take, for example, Bill Gates, who in 1991 warned that software patents could bring the industry to a standstill. And now? Since 2008, Gates has been lending his name to patents for Nathan Myhrvold's Intellectual Ventures, a company that many have accused of straight-up patent trolling.

sfcrazy writes: Debian will now benefit from the Xfce desktop environment as it is to switch from GNOME for Debian 8.0, codenamed “Jessie”. But GNOME may go back as the default if developers find it to be a better choice at the time of the evaluation, which will start around the point of DebConf (August 2014). “This will be re-evaluated before jessie is frozen (the switch to Xfce),” Hess said in the mailing list.

Submission + - Thanks, Science! Treating your baldness by growing new hair now made possible (columbia.edu)

trendspotter writes: In what seems to be a science breakthrough US researchers at Columbia University's Medical Center (CUMC) are developing the world's first real hair regeneration method. Rather than simply redistributing existing hair from one part of the skin to another, they are using the patient’s own cells to grow completely new hair to treat female hair loss and male baldness.

Comment No more corn juice in my fuel!!! (Score 5, Interesting) 419

I drive one of the most common cars in the U.S., a Honda Accord with with a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine. I'm lucky to have a station nearby that sells ethanol-free gasoline, and I originally switched just to test, but over the long term, I'm paying 1-2% more for ethanol-free gas, but have have gotten 5-7% better gas mileage. Adding 10% corn-based ethanol to gas makes it cost more to drive the same distance, and adds to fossil fuel pollution by itself while being used and additionally throughout it's production cycle from corn stalk to your tank....
