having been around (online) in 1997 i can assure you video cds and avi files were rampant on irc networks at the time. real player was around as soon as yahoo was launched (acoording to wikis) and while real encoder wasn't free it wasn't long after the release of the fraunhauffer codecs for audio that mysterious mpeg-4 as divx came along.

It really depends on the individual role, the team as a whole, and the individual being hired. I shouldn't have used numbers as people are entirely too hung up on it.
Really? Do you know how many talented developers who are completely and utterly 'dysfunctional' themselves and cause irrevocable damage to the team and its work output? It's not something I enjoy dealing with as much as helping people continue to grow and learn.
Depending on what need I'm trying to fill, I hire 90% for culture fit and 10% for technical ability. Most often, people can learn to improve their technical ability, especially b/c there is very rarely any single individual who can fill an open req 100%. That said, what I have found cannot be learned as well, is how to fit into an organization's culture.
Broad experience is great and I wholly support companies which are looking to add resources who possess such knowledge; however, broad experience can come with the price of not having enough targeted knowledge to bring deep-dive specifics to the mix.
The real question you should be asking is whether they can figure it out on their own if tasked with finding a solution to the problem. I guarantee you that most of those you have cast aside due to their lack of public-key cryptography knowledge would be able to do so while bringing you the specific knowledge you need straight out of their heads.
Honestly, if you interviewed me and I didn't know the answer to some mostly irrelevant question and told me that's why I didn't get the job, I would thank you for not hiring me to work with someone who doesn't know enough about being a hiring manager to do his job effectively.
i saw the pilot for a potential wheel of time tv series. if you've read the books, it's nothing new but for any diehard fan it is a must see. it takes place in the age of legends just after the taint. the actors did a decent job, the scenes were ok and the special effects were laughable. but this is a pilot and it was based on perhaps 1 or 2 pages from the book. apparently the company that holds the rights to WoT was obligated to make something WoT to not lose the tv/movie rights. it was f
"Pfft can't do anything via HDMI without HDCP to keep movie studios happy."
not true at all. my alienware laptop will only accept inbound HDCP codes from modern updating gaming consoles, as such trying to display a desktop on the laptops display doesn't work because HDCP is not fully implemented in windows linux etc. yes if you use powerdvd to play a bluray it will use HDCP but in truth the windows and linux devices don't use HDCP by default unless software with the current HDCP key is used. to protect that key it is not included with windows. and powerdvd uses encryption to protect its key. make a roll your own home theater pc based on an open source distribution and all your 'ripped' or 'downloaded' content will play to any hdmi device and it will play just fine
parents should accept their childrens flaws. flaws are the only thing that makes us valuable. too bad the 1% are trying to make themselves the most wealth and as such the most uniformity among society so they can be milked into running their empires without ever becoming a real threat to the PTB.
it's a Brother brand printer and supports linux, but it's wifi enabled too, and the wifi and lan printing are exclusive of each other. the linux machines are only postscript over lan supported but since i rarely print and my dad needs to be able to print wirelessly i am using it's wireless drivers. i can see why they don't recommend color laser printers for home users. anyways it's an awesome setup and well worth the money, in my oplinion
as i understand the ceramic or silver substrate will bond it and make it stable enough for use as a microchip.
"I know a company has to be profitable to keep people employed"
woah hold on there as long as the company has buzzwords they can reel em in on wall street and run at losses for many many years before the aftermath comes along.
i find usb (powered) bluray burners ($80+ on amazon) work on any usb 2.0 or better connection. if you're on a budget a bd-rom/dvd-rw or just a dvd-rw will work. i recommend BD simply because i prefer it to dvd.
