Comment Re: tired of the lack of progress on GIMP (Score 2) 75

I too have tried to use GIMP over the years. GIMP can be good for some things, and can even be great for a subset of things, but the overall workflow is very convoluted and difficult. I seem to be trying to do things in spite of the program. I know there are some people who do great things with GIMP, and I have sung the praises of specific features (they had a resynthesize before Photoshop for example) but overall, Photoshop, with all its warts (and there are many) is just more cohesive. Back on topic, I have never really been able to get much out of Krita. I am a photographer and quite tech savvy, but I do not "get:" Krita. Maybe I will have to try again...

And to stretch the analogy, the throttle has been moved to just beside the dash with no indication (other than buried in the owners manual) of where it is. I admit I have not used 8.1, but even without the metro abomination (and an ugly desktop reminiscent of win 3.1) things in win8 have not only been moved (again?) for no reason, but they have been cleverly HIDDEN (I am looking at you power button). I guess I could learn all the new tricks, but when the system blue screens and up pops a HAPPY FACE!!? yeah, no. Microsoft has lost touch with its users.

Submission + - New Powers Coming For 007: Driving Over The Speed Limit (telegraph.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: The Telegraph reports, "Britain’s spies are to be given a “licence to speed” for the first time, under changes to motoring laws. While James Bond would no doubt have scorned such niceties, officers in MI5 and MI6 are currently required to obey the rules of the road, even when national security is under threat. Now Robert Goodwill, the transport minister, intends to add the Security Service and the Secret Intelligence Service to the group of agencies with permission to break the speed limit."

Comment Re:A car refurbishment industry (Score 1) 368

There is a huge car refurbishment industry. Most of the cars refurbished are more "exciting" than a Camry. Watch some of Jay Leno's videos to get an idea of refurbishing old cars (some before the turn of the last century...) The problem is that most common cars, like the Camry, are designed to be disposable.Think of them as toasters. Sure you can fix your old toaster, but it is probably cheaper, and definitely less hassle to go out and buy a new one...

They do still exist. I was setting up a win8 machine a while back and it kept blue screening. It seems that the manufacturer installed AV was fighting with Microsoft's security and would bring the whole machine down. I removed the AV and suggested only connecting to the internet for updates (system was a mission critical laptop running medical software)

In my case (and I would think many other photographers, videographers, graphic designers, etc) I often deal with files over 100 MB and occasionally deal with files approaching 1GB. Wifi would suck in these instances.

And since I work interactively with the files, I could not just upload them, let the servers work on them, and download the finished product. I admit that there are has been some advances in working with a virtual file, then just rendering the final file on output, but none of these are perfect yet.
