Submission + - Intel Releases Masses (computerworld.com)

symbolset writes: "Computerworld reports another round of layoffs is planned at Intel. This announcement comes in response to an anonymous blog posting about the challenges of this redeployment. It comes on the heels of a previous round of layoffs that saw Intel shed 10% of its global workforce in the past year.

Recent financial reports show the cuts working as Intel reports a $1.3B profit for the most recent quarter even as it engages in a price war that drives rival AMD to a $600M loss for the same period."

This high performance LED, as a next-generation lighting source, is also claimed to be the brightest LED at the level of 8W in the industry. The single package product emits up to 420 lumens at 600mA maximum and 350 lumens on average."

Submission + - Acrobat Reader8.1 released for Linux (adobe.com) 1

gnufied writes: "Adobe released Adobe Reader 8.1 for *nix platforms after some good 4 months from release on Windows platform. You can download it here .

Although their work is commendable, but its not clear what policy Adobe is following when it comes to GNU/Linux as a desktop platform. Can we ask Adobe, why it was delayed by 4 months and why PhotoShop et.el is not yet available on free operating systems? Now that Apple has become new Microsoft with more control over data and media, that was ever seen previously, its going to be tough for people who want freedom and choice. And whats really sad is its adored by many of our heroes (http://www.paulgraham.com/mac.html, http://www.loudthinking.com/)

Without support from Vendors like Adobe, GNU/Linux will be hard pressed to become a desktop alternative(although its for me since last 4 years). This also brings the question that, "does proliferation of non-free software on a free operating system, misses the whole point?". In other words, "Will you be using Adobe Reader on GNU/Linux and not feel DIRTY?".

Also, does availability of non-free and may be somewhat superior solutions on GNU/Linux platform will slow down the momentum behind alternative free softwares. Will it affect, softwares like, http://okular.kde.org/, http://gimp.org/ http://inkscape.org?"

Submission + - Content Management vs Framework

Killer Instinct writes: Which would you recommend, content management system or a framework? If it matters, PHP is the underlying language. I work in a small group developing internal web pages for our company. We call them "tools" since they basically enforce a process and allow for metrics to be produced for management. The group started with 2 people 6 years ago, but now we have a few more members of our team. PHP was selected at the start, and has worked fine. However we are now at a point where a Framework or a Content Management system could allow us to be more productive, and are at a crossroads. We do have new tools to create, but basically everything is tied together with a backend database and code, which link many of what used to, and are often used as, standalone tools together. Most of the group can write decent SQL, a few of us are engineers, and a few are programmers. From your experience, what is the deciding factor to make a change to a framework, and when do you think a content management system should be used, instead of a framework.

Submission + - Open source developement, motivation and time

food4thought writes: "I work for one large organization maintaining the old piece of code. Unfortunately this doesn't generate a lot of interest/excitement and I often feel like doing something more interesting. For the last few months I have been trying to work on some of the open source projects associated with Semantic Web. Since this is my personal efforts, I work on this once I am out of office in home or on weekends. However in my few initial days of this effort, I have noticed that starting up in any project is very painful, laborious an little boring as well. Sometimes I feel like giving all this up. So i want to ask you guys, in case you work in your free time on open source projects, what keeps you motivated for working on these open source projects. Another thing is once you have got a starting in the project, does this becomes little more interesting and exiting? Another thing is how do you guys manage the time between personal and professional commitments. Thanks"

All the compromised sites are hosted in Italy and, to date, Trend Micro identifies 1,174 affected Web sites.

Submission + - Is cash no longer legal tender? (uic.edu)

An anonymous reader writes: I attend the University of Illinois at Chicago. Last semester my housing arrangements went smoothly. I put down my application fee, and my deposit just fine, got a room for the semester and life went on. This semester, because there was supposedly a large number of students who did not check into their rooms last semester, we were required to make a $100 prepayment, in addition to the application fee and deposit. No problem, I think, I see the university is trying to make a quick buck off people who don't follow through with their plans. Now I do NOT have a checking account, a credit card, or anything. I am one of the few people who do EVERYTHING in cash. I don't trust the banks, I don't trust credit card companies. I also had a trip planned for out of the country, so I get my cash, and on my way to the airport, I stop by the housing office to make my prepayment. They refuse to take cash. They will not charge my university account (so I can pay the bursar or whoever I need to) in cash, and they want a check or money order. Nowhere in their letter did they say that. I fear out of technicality I am going to loose my housing since I cannot get them their money on time because they do not take cash. Is it legal for a state-owned university, let alone any business to not take legal tender?

Submission + - Open Souce Movement May Change Everything (lifehack.org)

crazybilly writes: "Lifehack.org has an article about 'how the open movement will change everything'. After software, the article suggests schools, governement, and money among others.

From the article, "Now consider this: the open-source concept doesnt have to just apply to software. It can apply to anything in life, any area where information is currently in the hands of few instead of many, any area where a few people control the production and distribution and improvement of a product or service or entity.""

Submission + - Google Demands ID to get off Street View (wired.com)

mytrip writes: "EFF privacy advocate and unhappy Street View model Kevin Bankston made good on his vow to try out Google's take-down policy after THREAT LEVEL found a picture of his unwitting mug stalking the sidewalks near EFF's offices. Submission + - Adobe, Apple and Safari, what's the connection?

johneal writes: So safari has been released on Windows and suddenly the old "Apple and Windows not understanding each others markets" argument has opened again. Well a little history may help shine some light on what has lead use to where we are today.

About four years ago Internet Explorer on the OS X was basically dead, so Apple had no choice but to go looking for a web browser to ship with OS X. Apple decided not to be in the same position in the future, so Apple created their own browser. Rather than start from scratch Apple used the KHTML as a starting point to develop their browser, and so Safari was born. Part of this development lead to a sub-branch of the KHTML project called WebKit.

Now fast forward to the present day, Microsoft and Adobe have both announced Rich Internet Applications desktop platforms in the past couple of months ( Silverlight, and Apollo also known as AIR respectively). The Adobe AIR team faced a similar problem to Apple, they needed a HTML/JavaScript engine, you can guess where this is going, in the end Adobe settled on the WebKit open source project.

So back to Safari, cynically you could suggest that Safari was released on Windows in order to get some Beta testing for the WebKit before the both the iPhone and Apollo are officially realised (and I will not fuel the fire further on this). But what I find more interesting is the fact that we now have two of what are probable the most established players in multimedia (three if you include Macromedia now part of Adobe) creating an open source WebKit, which can be used for embedded devices, desktop applications and web browsers.

Submission + - Hans Reiser trial update (cbs5.com)

An anonymous reader writes: "As the murder trial gets under way in the disappearance of Nina Reiser, a 31-year-old mother of two missing since September, defense lawyers are trying to sow doubt about whether she is dead at all. The son, Rory Reiser, told police that he never saw his mother leave the house after dropping him off, which fits the prosecution's theory that Nina Reiser was killed there."

Submission + - Safari Available for Windows (apple.com)

Toreo asesino writes: Apple have released Safari for Windows XP and Vista. Currently only in beta 3 stage, it was announced during a conference of developers for Apple products in San Francisco, and shows Apple's clear intention of expanding the 4.9% market share Safari currently has.

Interestingly, Apple also claim their browser is almost 2x the speed of other browsers for html and JavaScript performance.
