China Aims To Move Up the Food Chain 257

krou notes reporting in the Christian Science Monitor that the current economic crisis is helping China's push into higher-end manufacturing by shaking out low-profit companies. The hope is that, instead of just assembling iPods, Chinese companies will be able to invent the next big thing instead. In this move China is following the well-worn path taken by Japan and the Asian tigers before it. "Last month, the National Development and Reform Commission announced revised plans to transform Guangdong and neighboring Hong Kong and Macau into a 'significant innovation center' by 2020. One hundred R&D labs will be set up over the next three years. By 2012, per-capita output in the region should jump 50 percent from 2007, to 80,000 yuan ($11,700). And by 2020, the study predicts, 30 percent of all industrial output should come from high-tech manufacturing."

Microsoft Brings Back DRM 414

Barence writes "Microsoft yesterday unveiled its MSN Mobile Music service — and a surprise return to digital rights management (DRM). While companies such as Apple and Amazon have finally moved to music download services free of copy protection, MSN Mobile locks tracks to the mobile handset they are downloaded to. It also charges more than the other services per track, and offers no way to transfer your tracks to your new phone when you upgrade. The company's Head of Mobile UK spoke to PC Pro about the launch, but his answers are almost as baffling as the service itself. Best quote: Q: 'If I buy these songs on your service — and they're locked to my phone — what happens when I upgrade my phone in six months' time?' A: 'Well, I think you know the answer to that.'"

Submission + - Another flying car takes to the skies (cnn.com)

GillBates0 writes: "CNN is carrying a story about yet another flying car. The "Skycar" is a road-legal all-terrain buggy with a huge rear propeller and a fabric wing. It's creator Giles Cardozo took off from London today for a journey to Timbuktu, Mali, in West Africa via Spain and Morocco. Cardozo and his team of engineers say advances in flexible wing technology have made their car more practical, with more precise handling and increased safety over traditional rigid wings. The car runs on biofuel and has a takeoff speed of 73 km/h (45 mph) and requires a distance of less than 200 meters (220 yards). The flexible wing is folded and packed in the back of the car when driving on the road and can deploy immediately when it is ready to fly. A video report is available as well."

New Google Favicon Deja Vu All Over Again? 227

theodp writes "Last June, Google rolled out a new favicon, the small branding icon that graces your URL bar when you visit Google. Which, as it turned out, bore a striking similarity to Garth Brooks' Circle-G logo. Well, Google went back to the drawing board and has come back with a new favicon, which it says was inspired by — not copied from, mind you — its users' submitted ideas. Some are also seeing inspiration elsewhere for the new favicon, which consists of white 'g' on a background of four color swatches. Take the AVG antivirus icon, for instance. Or everybody's favorite memory toy, Simon. Or — in perhaps the unkindest cut of all — the four-color Microsoft Windows logo, shown here with a superimposed white '7'. Anything else come to mind?" What comes to mind for me is just how obsessed many people are with the Google favicon.

Comment Re:Hinduism would have been better as Fortran (Score 1) 844

I agree.

The multiple dieties in Hinduism merely translate to various aspects of the One Absolute Infinite Consciousness.

The thinking here is that the "Absolute" is so unfathomable that everybody has a different view of it (like the fabled elephant and 8 blind men). These aspects can be viewed as different dieties and even as different religions.

Indeed, Hinduism allows and *encourages* different views of the Absolute, and thus is inherently Pluralisitc (accepts all religious paths as equally valid, promoting coexistence).

Nintendo's Homebrew-Blocking Update Hacked 157

ElementC writes "Team Twiizers, the group behind almost all of the Wii Homebrew scene, has released an update to the Homebrew Channel (and installer) that allows for installation on a Wii with the most recent update installed. While the team still recommends against installing the Nintendo update, those who accidentally updated or purchase games that require the update are no longer left out to dry. This update to the Homebrew Channel also adds SDHC support, a feature Nintendo has not implemented in vanilla Wiis. The community has also created an app that updates just the Wii Shop Channel — allowing users to purchase Wiiware and Virtual Console games without losing their homebrew. It took the team only two days to get the fix out."

Submission + - Taser parties a growing US trend (bbc.co.uk)

GillBates0 writes: "The BBC is running a story about 'Taser parties' becoming a growing trend in the US. Unlike a typical tupperware party however, the conversation here revolves around crime statistics, sales pitch and target practice using Tasers. The host shows off the latest models designed to appeal to women (bright red, soft pink and electric blue) and fashionable accessories like a carrying pouch made of fake leopard-print fur. While some parties like the American Civil Liberties Union question Taser marketing, ownership and safety, others seem convinced it's an effective way to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms. I, for one, bow humbly to our Taser toting female overlords, lest they zap me with it."

Scientist Suggests We Explore 'Universe is a VR Simulation' Theory 1144

holy_calamity writes "A New Zealand physicist has written a paper saying that physicists should seriously explore the possibility the universe is a giant virtual reality simulation. He says that the existence of quantum phenomena could be due to the underlying digital nature of the simulation and also claims his VR hypothesis can explain relativity, the big bang and more. It should be possible to perform experiments to prove the hypothesis too. He reasons that if reality was to do something that information processing cannot, then it cannot be virtual."

Submission + - Google at the gas pump (cnn.com)

GillBates0 writes: "According to this CNN story, Google is all set to set up Google Maps functionality at gas pumps across the country. The pumps will include an Internet connection and will display Google's mapping service on a built-in screen. In addition to driving directions, motorists will be able to locate local businesses and landmarks. Local merchants will be able to offer coupons with the service as well."

Submission + - Man flies 193 miles in lawn chair (cnn.com)

GillBates0 writes: "CNN is reporting that Kent Couch managed to fly 193 miles in a lawn chair fitted with 105 helium balloons. The flight lasted approximately 9 hours, after which he touched down safely in an Oregon farm. As he made about 25 miles an hour, a three-car caravan filled with friends, family and the dog followed him from below. In 1982, Larry Walters tried a similar feat in Los Angeles and surprised an airline pilot, who radioed the control tower that he had just passed a guy in a lawn chair. His wife was quoted as saying "I know he'd be thinking about it more and more, it would always be on his mind. This way, at least he's fulfilled his dream.""
