This is really a huge myth that has been sold to mainstream america by corporate interests. Unions are working to make businesses engines for economic growth for society instead of engines for enriching a few wealthy individuals. How many news stories have you heard in the US media about unions keeping a business out of an area, but you never hear about a business that refuses to go into an area because there is a strong union presence even though it happens all the time. Unions work in your best interest even when you don't understand that, and even though you don't deserve the protection because you'd gladly submit to corporate rule.
