Barbie Fashion Designer sold more copies than Quake did, seriously. Part of the reason for that was that it was about designing outfits for Barbie that one could print out and make for the actual dolls.

Civilization is already IN the hall of fame, I checked. As are games like Starcraft, Halo, DOOM, Colossal Cave Adventure, World of Warcraft, Kings Quest.

And may I gently suggest that a Video Game Hall of Fame shouldn't just be "brown shooters for 90's edgelords"

it is a much better PS4 than the original and its fragile, noisy optical disk system

The BD drive on a PS4 is only used for games when they are installed, and a quick check when you start a disc based game after you install it Otherwise it doesn't read games from the BD drive only the hard drive.

Also the noisiest thing about a PS4 is the fan! PS4's are built like tanks like the 50001 series PS2's, not trouble prone like some other PS1, PS2 or PS3 models. And you could replace the hard disk drive in it with a SATA SSD.

That said, the PS5 IS a better way of playing PS4 games, since you can just copy your PS4 games on your PS4 to an external drive, then just plug it in to the PS5. No need for PS4 games to use valuable SSD space. It also applies PS4 Pro boosts to PS4 games.

I keep on hearing about how the PlayStation 5 is now easily available, but I've still yet to see one in stores.

I found mine at the local wal-mart a couple of weeks after launch.

I do know Sony won't sell you a PS5 through their own online store, which is amusing.

They do!

It has only gotten *worse* since then with the right ramping up the violence across the nation dramatically in the last 2 years.

I heard the latest one (xbox series uber?) was hard to get a hold of.

Xbox Series X, The PS5 is in a similar situation easier to get online than brick and mortar.

I assume console players are like PC players and make sure their purchase lasts 10 years before replacing? Otherwise if they upgrade every time there's a new model then that definitely costs more than a PC.

10 years? Average for me is 6 or 7, depending on availability and games. I was also under the impression that the most pc-centric of PC gamers upgraded their machines, specifically graphic cards, more often than console players do

Just sticking with the PlayStations here. I bought my Playstation 1 in early 1998 used...$120 I think, there were enough RPG's/adventure games to justify it for me. My first game being Final Fantasy VII.

I tried to get a $299 PS2 on October 26th of 2000, but availability was an issue. I was able to get one in March of 2001. It plays PS1 games so immediately replaced that PS1. The PS2's ability to fast-load and texture-smooth PS1 games really benefitted late PSone games like Final Fantasy IX.

I waited on the PS3, in part because of the lack of RPGs, perhaps a bit longer than I should have since my CECHE01 (the $459 MGS4 with Dualshock 3 bundle model) has reduced PS2 backwards compatibility compared to the CECHA models. I got mine in late May of 2008. Again, since it could play PS2 and PS1 games it immediately replaced the PS2.

My PS4 is a November 19th 2013 launch $399 model, though there weren't many PS4 games I really wanted till 2014 so it sat along side the PS3. Upgraded the hard drive to 2TB.

I got my $499 PS5 (full model, not diskless) on November 29th of 2020 a couple of weeks after PS5 launch, it immediately replaced my PS4. Haven't touched the PS4 since, didn't need to, just put my PS4 games on an external hard drive and I was good to go. And it is LOT quieter. The PS5 applies PS4 PRO boosts to PS4 games. I added a 2TB NVMe SSD to it in January of 2022. And again, it sits alongside the PS3, which is still nice to have handy for PS3/PS2/PS1 games.

So I'm older than dirt so paying $70 for a game doesn't really shock me that much. I bought earthworm jim when it was new for $60. That's over $100 inflation adjusted. I try not to think about what I spent on my Sega Master system. And I had no business having an Atari 2600 back in the day. That was 3DO money.

More like Neo Geo money! If memory serves me right, of the game machines of the 70's/early 80's, the 2600 never reached more than 25% household penetration. The home computers even less.

I sometimes point people to online collections of old Sears "wish book" catalogs from the 80's, so they can see what the prices were really like. But even today there are the game equivalents of B-movies and indie-films where you pay less.
