chris wrote in to tell us that Registration for the 3rd Annual Atlanta Linux Showcase is open. First 100 registrations get an OS-Wars T-Shirt (I have one, they rock) brazilian brain sent us an English Translation of an Interview with Alfredo Kojima of WindowMaker fame. Scott wrote in to tell us that the July issue of Daemon News is online and Jim wrote in to tell us that the July issue of The FreeBSD 'zine is out too. geophile wrote in to tell us that Propoganda 10 is out. More excellent background images to consume your free RAM. Very yum. erios23 notified us of a new toy on jwz's webpage. BluBall sent us a Slashdot reference in Salon's Silicon Funnies. Spoofs Linux and Slashdot and even me a bit I guess (well, my name anyway). And finally chrisd (who may be biased on this one) wrote in to say that VA is one of the 10 best companies to work for (According to ZD) ranking amongst Replay, Nokia and Novell. I suspect that Nerf has something to do with it.

What a great idea. I also found this script [techweenie.net] out there that does the same kind of thing, but tiles instead of collages. Hours of fun and wasted bandwidth!

I still want to know what CmdrTaco has against Martha Stewart [geekculture.com]...
  • I wrote my own editor on my 386-33 (in 97) so that it ran nicely on that machine but had the features I wanted. It absolutely screamed on a P166. I'm looking forward to seing it run on a o'clocked (450) celeron (parts on order now:).

Yes, developing on the latest h/w is nice for the edit/compile/debug cycle, but it doesn't encourage you to keep it lean and mean. Hehe, even on my 386, my editor got a little bloated (embeded python, reads gzipped files...).

  • I find that I am attracted to AC. Very disturbing!

  • And I'll restate that Alfredo needs a new computer! He mentions in the interview that he develops Window Maker on a P100/16MB machine. Even $200 worth of upgrade hardware would make all the difference in the world.

There are plenty of Window Maker lovers on Slashdot. Could we put together an "Alfredo Needs An Upgrade" fund? If it was organized by someone trustworthy like Rob, I'd pitch in my US$20.

anyone else with me, or should I bring it up with my LUG?

  • Bill might be fitting as the evil emperor, not Darth. A bearded kernel hacker "dressed up" does not look very fitting. RMS might be the Chewie animal that would rip the heads off software hoarders... This design needs a little work...
  • With the onboard HSB modem its a steal.. oh wait.. that doesnt work.. duh :P..

  • Okay, I have no way to substantiate that claim.

However, I strongly suspect that CmdrTaco has a strong desire to become a professional homemaker, much like that guy from Interior Designs on PBS and Discovery. Unfortunately, Martha has already claimed the title of world's most well-known homemaker, leaving MarthaTaco -- erm... I mean, CmdrTaco to fall back on his second greatest passion, providing a public venue for open-source flame-wars.

That T-Shirt design really bugs me. I won't get into details but I believe that most of you can figure this out.

    Darth Vader is Luke's father.

Leia and Luke are brother and sister.

C-3PO was built by Anakin/Darth Vader (hmmm, embrace and extend perhaps?)

The implications of all of this staggers the mind. Can you see the scene at the next Comdex when Bill looks over and says, "Linus, I am your father!" Of course, I look forward to the day when I hear, "You were right, you were right about me. Tell your sister, you were right." The connection between Leia and Luke is also interesting. Hidden at birth, but really related. At last we know the truth. The end of the OS naming wars is over.
  • Commander Burrito is obviously a Rob Malda left too long alone with the salsa, ie all damp and pliable.
  • Minor typo in the Quickie. It should be http://propaganda.themes.org/ [themes.org].
  • I can't go to ALS. But I'll shell out cash for a shirt.

My favorite. Linux + Starwars. Yum.
  • Good god, man. I never knew.

Check out the big version at http://www.linuxshowcase.org/shirts/als_sw_parody. jpg

I must admit, I often think that the open source community desperately needs talented graphic designers. While this image is a neat idea, it simply looks like it was done by an advanced amateur. But not by a professional...

Same with many other designs. Check out the results of any recent "logo design" contest for open source projects. 95% of the entries are very very bad combinations of cliparts stolen from other images.

Think of the surfing penguin from the Beowulf project. That's a _really_ good design! Or the other penguin from the GGI project. Folks who have this talent should be encouraged to do more designs.

P.S.: No, I don't pretend that I can do better. There's a reason why I don't do graphics design. But there are people out there who can. We need to ask them to contribute.
  • I think we're OK until the 2nd show after ALS.

That's the one where we see Alan Cox in the bronze bikini.

    please.. no...
My god, it's full of stars....
  • For a few weeks now I've had "It's the code, stupid." in big black marker on white paper right next to my computer. It's worked wonders.
  • Propoganda? At least you're consistent, the link also points to propoganda.themes.org.

    Oh well.
  • r2d2 is evil.. http://www.csee.uq.edu.au/~trent/r2d2isevil.html
  • Life's just looking stinky. Not only are the Chemical Brothers not coming to Atlanta, but I'm missing the Linux thing.

Hey if anybody knows of an Athens Georgia based LUG could they give me a message. I have some questions and I'd like some local help.
