If nothing is truly alive, then there's no such thing as murder, and I should be free to kill that author. Afterall, he's merely an arrangement of atoms. I would just be reformulating matter.
Seriously though, this guy's outlook seems to be that if something is not easy to classify, the classification must not exist.
