Journal SPAM: "Our dollar is worth maybe zero over here" 3

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar's value is dropping so fast against the euro that small currency outlets in Amsterdam are turning away tourists seeking to sell their dollars for local money while on vacation in the Netherlands.

"Our dollar is worth maybe zero over here," said Mary Kelly, an American tourist from Indianapolis, Indiana, in front of the Anne Frank house. "It's hard to find a place to exchange. We have to go downtown, to the central station or post office."

  • Makes sense though. Currency exchange in Europe can be anything from a Mom & Pop style of operation to a Multinational Bank or the Government. I can see how it would be more hassle than it's worth dealing with the dollar at the moment for the smaller operators.

True, true, but it doesn't tell good things about the dollar, doesn't it?

Anyway, I found this [reuters.com] way more fascinating.

  • Oops, nevermind. Turns out a bigger percentage of the buyers are Canadian. Thought those guys would know better, eh? And there's a funny little political game the currency exchanges are playing. They have yet to allow the Canadian dollar reach parity with the American one when converting to local currency, even though on the international market, the Canadian dollar will get you more pesos.
