Journal WillAffleckUW's Journal: Je Suis Charlie 15

One of the funny (tragic?) things is that my son and I traveled to Paris and bought tons of bandes desinnees including ones by some of the cartoonists that were murdered by terrorists today.

I stand with them.

Your right to claim blasphemy ends when you set foot outside the mosque.

.... I disagree, they can claim blasphemy all they want. The problem is that the prescription for that blasphemy is death.

      Here's an example.

I'm Catholic, and therefore, I think all Protestants are blaspheming heretics when they deny the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist.*(see below)

My prescription is that all Protestants do the following:
+ Renounce their silly Calvinistic / Lutheran blasphemies and false teachings like
      • No, I don't really think all Protestants are heretics. Just misinformed.

:-) Yes, I'm sure they feel the same way about you.

I always figured that the guy who throws the first punch in an argument is the asshole, regardless of their belief system.

        • I'm every bit as Roman Catholic as Jesus. Every bit.
          • I've every bit as Roman Catholic as St. Peter and St. Paul. ;)
            • And unto the Jews I became as a Jew [blueletterbible.org], that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

I mean, I've been a member of a Baptist church for 15 years, but "Baptist" and $5 will get you a beverage at Starbucks.

        • Right, and outside of Ireland Catholics and Protestants aren't currently slaughtering each other the way the Shia and Sunni groups are.
          • Yeah they are, busy slaughtering all sorts of people, just not each other at this point. Your silly 'war on terror' is only another inquisition, with murder, torture, lots of sex and rape, the works.

Furthermore the president of your catholic league is playing the part [catholicleague.org] of terror apologist [catholicleague.org]. See, they don't have to commit all the mayhem if they can get someone else to do the dirty deed. Plausible deniability, and all that, still works to this day.

            • The Catholic League is not the Vatican. I am not a member of the League (though I am a Knight of Columbus).

Furthermore, what Donohue is saying is Biblical, about trying not to deliberately offend.

The reason for that is, obviously, if they're spitting mad at you they aren't going to listen to the Gospel from you.

That said... I support the right of comedians to offend whoever they want.
      • But I'm a sola scriptura play all the way.
        • My wife used to be a Protestant, and even joined BSF... when we left the Protestant Church I was attending with her, she went all Sola Scriptura in an attempt to convince me why I was wrong to remain Catholic.

What she found in the intense study of Scripture converted her to Catholicism.

          This book reinforced it. [amazon.com]
          • Yeah, I don't even bother with "Protestant" because I've never take eyes off of Christ long enough to fret Rome.
Which is not meant to get too combative: I can cheerfully support the Pope when he's "rightly dividing the Word of Truth".
  • I see a big difference though between claiming blasphemy and killing blasphemous people. Similarly we allow people to openly criticize other people in public over who is the most - or least - like Christ in their work. Why is it OK to compare to one religious idol but not another? We certainly can't claim that nobody was ever killed for being inadequately Christ-like.
  • Somebody's ginnin' for war, and profit (prophet?). And there are other stories to push to the back page, good ones too. Everybody trying to make the 'morality' play here is just being fished into their game.
