Comment i though they were talking about Seattle... (Score 1) 520

At first i thought that this article was about the working poor in Seattle. It rings true here with Amazon and other tech companies. I recently moved out of a homeless shelter and i knew at least 5 people who worked for the 'Zon and still couldn't afford a room to rent situation. It is kinda the reason i got out of tech and into food.

In any case the comparison to Soviet Russia immediately falls on its face. I own my house, I own my business, I own my car and dozens of other things. It is annoying when people try and make comparisons between things when very superficially they are similar but they aren't even remotely close in scale or severity.

He said "when I grew up.." Russia was a completely different country back then. He is referring to the cold war era.

but isn't that at least in part what is supposed to be so great about Linux and related bits?

not everything that is Linux is open source and free. Linux it self yes maybe i should add the word "hardly"

I agree with Woz. Nobody owns anything. Everything digitally is licensed. Even when you hold a physical copy in your hands it's on loan for 60$. You ever actually read a EULA? With the NSA spying on you on everything not only don't you own anything nothing is private anymore.. welcome to the new America! Welcome to the New World... I hope you enjoy your stay and by the way ignore that 4th amendment only the 2nd one kinda counts....

Comment What keeps me off Windows? Apple and Microsoft! (Score 1, Interesting) 1215

I always been a fan of many oses including windows. it just seems microsoft hasn't given me enough...fast enough and what they give me gets in my way. I love linux/unix/gnu/bsd/ect for a good many year since i was handed a copy of slackware 2.something and told this is the future of computing (in truth it was at the time) but it still a little geek for most of computing kind. Apple (current desktop) used to be called the "awful macintrash" but now that it has incorporated my love of *xin/bsd/ect's and a interface that honestly hasn't changed majorly over it's life. Intel based machines, power and sophistication, flexibility, open source-i-ness, has kept me from the windows side of computing for a while. I don't even like troubleshooting a windows machine anymore. If Microsoft would start from scratch and rebuild windows on a more secure level and ideals i would give it a shot. I would love to feel at home again in a Microsoft enviroment but they seem to make it impossible to find stuff, and keep a status flow. For me the removal of the start button was a prime example of what i don't like about windows and microsoft's enviroment changes... as long as i can remember the apple in the left hand corner has been a fixture in mac os since mac os.

I had this conversation with my mom. I granted her the first 6chapters of genesis were true then when to Cain killing Abel. Why did god mark him (whosoever may come across) and he walked east of Eden found a land called Nod and married someone and had kids. Where did all these people come from all of sudden? What was Caine wife's name? If its call Nod that means it has established borders to Eden. Who name it thusly?

A few years back I was the sole tech for a hair salon and the major problem with pos was tipping. Usi g quickbooks pos at the time was woefull inept at handling tips. We had to devise a work around for 2 years the. Was forced to purchase another 3 copies of the new version that handled tips. I had found an open source pos at the time (bananaPos I believe) that allowed tips had record keeping we needed but didn't work with our financial service providers tech. Comment Group speak-up method (Score 3, Informative) 1127

Ive worked in a NOC where we had 1 girl for the longest. She was considered "one of the guys." i'm openly gay and was treated as "one of the guys" the environment has a built in level of tolerance due to age group. If something hit too close a simple "hey too far" handle the situation. We all respected each others boundaries but also there was plenty of sexual banter of all types. Later when we got another female, due to respect to age and presentation, we toned it down but even after a while she was "one of the guys" sometimes the worse one (in a funny way). Everybody need to respect boundaries. And to also speak up to the group first before charging down to HR. I feel when "group speak-up" is leveraged it leads to a better team. Just my observation...
