With the precedent of this case, If you had the skill to do something the FBI needed for an investigation they could simply compel you to do so under the all writs act and if they refuse you could go to jail until you comply.

Sounds like a modern version of the Quartering Acts:

They are boycotting them now, and it's clear that CEO's remark is what started the brouhaha.

So? I believe it's justified. The link between Chick Fil A and anti gay rights isn't some tenuous maze or an exercise in 6 degrees of separation. Truett Cathy owns Chik Fil A and makes money selling chicken sandwiches. Truett Cathy started the WinShape Foundation, which donates money to anti gay rights organizations. It's very clear that for every dollar you give Truett Cathy, a portion of that goes into the pockets of an organization that actively campaigns against gay rights. Perhaps the public was not aware of this before a couple of weeks ago, but he made that abundantly clear now.

Imagine if there was a really obnoxious person who thousands of people spontaneously disliked, all at once. And each one, without an autodialer, called just a few times a day to ask the person to stop being obnoxious. Is that/should that be illegal?

Interesting point. In fact, doesn't this happen all the time? For example, when activist groups organize 'call-ins' or 'fax-ins' to a company/congressman/government office, with the goal of both voicing their displeasure and jamming phone lines?

I'm going to miss having that option, though I'm not sure it's a deal-breaker for many people.

actually, i use target disk mode daily. i know i'm in a minority, but it's quite convenient.

i bring my black macbook to the office, start it up in target disk mode, and then plug it into one of the big fat 8core macpros with a large screen. then, i login to my own account with my own home folder on the macbook, while taking advantage of the macpro's hardware.

i also have a lot of fw peripherals, and daisy chaining multiple 2.5" external hard drives is great! to do this with usb, you'd have to plug power and data into each hard drive separately.

i'll miss firewire on the macbooks, but as long as the macbook pros keep it, i guess i'll be happy.

Apple Ordered to Pay Blogger Legal Fees 161

inetsee writes "Apple has been ordered to pay legal fees for two web sites that reported on an in-development Apple project code named 'Asteroid'. According to the article on WebProNews, Apple was ordered by a Santa Clara County court to pay almost $700,000 in legal reimbursement to AppleInsider and PowerPage after the court agreed with the Electronic Frontier Foundation legal team that the web sites 'qualified as legitimate online news sites' engaging in trade journalism. Apple had claimed that it had a right to protect its trade secrets, but the EFF successfully argued that 'Subpoenaing journalist sources is not an acceptable means of discovery.'"

2006 Was the Warmest Year Ever 782

kpw10 writes "Dr. Jeff Masters from Wunderground has a great summary of this year's rather abnormal weather (his blog is the best source on the net for in-depth weather analysis). The post discusses some of the cyclical climate forces at work this year and compares this year's record temperatures to records from the past. There are some interesting differences, particularly in the extent of the northern hemisphere seeing record highs this year." From the article: "December's weather in the Northeast U.S. may have been a case of the weather dice coming up thirteen — weather not seen on the planet since before the Ice Age began, 118,000 years ago. The weather dice will start rolling an increasing number of thirteens in coming years, and an ice-free Arctic Ocean in summertime by 2040 is a very real possibility..." Here is the The National Climatic Data Center's report announcing the entry of 2006 into the record books.
