The UK’s regulations requiring age-gating for porn and various other types of harmful content has come into force today. It goes well beyond imposing requirements on porn sites, covering sites like Twitter as well. British media focus is on critics who say it doesn’t go far enough, with practically no attention given to the warnings from others that forcing individuals to hand credit card or ID information to porn sites may end up in tears being roundly ignored as an issue. This change is likely to be the source of endless stories in the years ahead.

Turns out that vertical solar is a real thing, and growing as a behind-the-meter option in some European countries. Havng started in Germany, it's now spreading to Spain, where there are plenty of sunny balconies that can quickly be fitted with cheap solar panels providing 30% of a household's needs.

The dramatic decline in the price of solar panels is driving a massive reshaping of developing world economies. In Pakistan, they've imported solar equivalent to 30% of the country's entire generating capacity in six months. In Namibia, rooftop solar is now 11% of total capacity; in Eswatini, it's 15% and in South Africa it's 9%. Solar offers cheaper running costs, no local air pollution, and security of supply, which is hugely valuable in parts of the world where grid operators frequently resort to load shedding. And large amounts of this growth is happening behind-the-meter, too. This will change the economies of the developing world permanently, as well as improving health and life expectancy, as diesel generators get used less and less in years to come.Link to Original Source

The UK government has announced it will substantially increase offshore wind investment in the next five years, in partnership with the Crown Estate (a public corporation that owns land including the coastal seabed on behalf of the monarch). It will do this via its new state-owned generation company, Great British Energy. The new approach includes ensuring grid connections are in place, and is in tandem with changes to the UK's planning regime that should reduce the ability of NIMBY groups to prevent infrastructure build-outs. Since it came to power 20 days ago, the government has also approved three new solar farms and reversed a ban on onshore wind.

The Nobel Prize winner John Goodenough, who invented the lithium battery, has died. His invention would change first the tech industry by enabling mobile devices, and in later years the auto industry, with the commercialisation of EVs. He continued to push forward the technology till the end of his life, working on solid state among other advances.

British finance expert Martin Lewis is suing Facebook for defamation, after a year of trying to persuade the company to stop accepting scam ads featuring his name and image. Facebook insists that he report to them every time he spots a scam; he wants them to check with him before they take money for an ad featuring his name or picture, so he can tell them if it's legit or not.

The BBC is reporting that all its websites were taken offline on New Year's Eve for several hours, and the attack appears to be from a group calling itself New World Hacking. The group claims its raison d'être is to attack IS, but wanted to test out its capabilities first and chose the BBC as a target.
