shanen's Journal: Rant of the day is for Microsoft

The linked story [https://www.computerworld.com/article/3519708/has-your-win10-search-box-gone-black-does-search-even-work.html] is about search problems caused by the latest Windows Update. Actually the machine I'm using now is even worse than that. Search problems began months ago and are merely continuing. I can't even get as far as the black box described in the linked story. There ain't no search on this machine. Can't get there from here.

Another Windows 10 machine has been insecure for weeks. I've been struggling with it as time allows, searching for patterns in the Windows Update failures and uninstalling anything that might be conflicting with the security update that is failing to install. No joy.

If I was working for the minimum wage as I struggle with that machine I would have earned enough for several new copies of Windows 10 by now. (Actually, it's MS Office that I apparnently need to pay for (again) before doing the full reset. But without knowing what the real problem is, I can't even be sure the reset will succeed.) At one point I even got desperate enough to call Microsoft for help. Even less joy.

Oh well. One out of three ain't bad. [Knocks on wood.] Most of my machines are not Windows 10 anyway.

Meta-commentary time? I think Microsoft is as greedy and as evil and as incompetent as ever, but they are actually trying to improve their reputation. Though the phone conversation was long and pointless, at least they were polite about it. But I sure as hell have no plans to ever again buy anything tainted by Microsoft if I can find ANY alternative.
