Journal shaitand's Journal: Grammar Troll Catch and Release 12

**** EDIT *****
Game over. This is becoming boring and the trolls have all taken to posting AC to avoid getting flagged. So much for the idea that they were really honest slashdotters working toward the common good.
***************

Today I decided to conduct an experiment. I noticed a user with this sig

"'Effect' is used as a noun. 'Affect' is used as a verb."

Kept getting posts from grammar trolls correcting him. This gave me an idea. So, I have set my sig to this line as bait. Using this bait I can capture grammar trolls and add them to my foes list so that I do not have to worry about seeing their posts. I reply to each troll with the following message "Congratulations. You have been caught in a troll trap. You are the latest in my campaign to capture and tag all the grammar trolls on Slashdot. Please refer to my journal for more information."

In addition I will occasionally change my sig to similar statements or put intentional spelling/grammar mistakes into subjects (in a way that does not hurt the legibility of my writing).

After catching each troll, I will add them to my foes list and mention them in my journal in case anyone else wants to add the trolls to their foes list.

Captured trolls are as follows:

dhowells
poopdeville
ralphclark
swillden
mtdnelson
ReverendLoki
arodland

Grammar Troll Catch and Release

  • I don't think I'll bother -- grammar trolls can be amusing -- but it's a good idea.
    • Of course grammar trolls are amusing. That is half the fun of starting a war with them, to bring the amusement out. ;)
      • Ah. Are you one of those masochists who gives their foes/freaks a higher score? ;)

It's okay, I understand. My masochist habits go more towards hot sauces...
  • Your grammar sucks. Please add me to your list.
  • Your foes list has about fifteen people, but your grammar troll list in the article only has six.

If you have people on your foes lists who are not grammar trolls, then it's absolutely worthless to the rest of us. Either do it right, or don't bother. It's a waste of everyone's time for you to brag about your stupid, useless list.
    • "If you have people on your foes lists who are not grammar trolls, then it's absolutely worthless to the rest of us."

Yes, that would be the reason for having two lists rather than just pointing you to my foes list. I'm sorry the light shines so dimly in your house.
  • You realize that in doing this you're just adding to the waste that CmdrTaco wants to get rid of in threads, right? Trolling for trolls? That's completely idiotic. Way to help in the cause of keeping topics on-topic. All you're doing is creating more posts that people have to read until that post gets a neg mod. Those of us that get mod points then have to waste them on the useless drivel that you cause. Even after they get down modded because of it, we still have to read it, because any good mod read
    • Not all trolls are bad. If it makes people think, its good. If it makes people think instead of going "STORY DUPE!!!" its even better. After all, by definition the whole article, and everything in it, should be modded -1 Redundant, so any off-topic discussion is a relief.

Its more fun (and useful) to play the [tt] Troll Tuesday game and force people to get a clue, don't you think?

      • I fail to see how discussing the article is redundant. If someone brings up an idea or question regarding the general subject of the article, but is not covered in the article (+1 Insightful?), how is this redundant? It would only be redundant if they just quoted the article, or repeat something already said. Discussions relevant to the article are generally encouraged [slashdot.org]
        • Well, for one thing, the biggest karma whores grab the +5 Insightful comments from the previous article, get modded up again, and its the same old discussion over again ... so a *lot* of the discussion is also duped ...

That's pretty redundant in my book.

Even if nobody intentinally did this, a lot of the discussions would still end up covering the same ground, making the same points, etc. Again, pretty redundant.

Thats when people like me come around - every Troll Tuesday - and try to shake things up.

  • I don't even know if you'll get this comment. (You put me on your foe list, thanks to this ingenious idea!)

I was brought to believe that it's rude to correct other people's grammar (unless you're a parent or teacher, obviously).

So, this is why I rose to the bait:

Your signature stated as fact an assertion which was clearly misleading. Had you just used the wrong word in the middle of your post, I would have ignored it. I see these as two distinctly different situations.

Anyway, I like to think that it

We can predict everything, except the future.
