Journal sailships's Journal: Where's the voice of dissent when it comes to White Boxes? 1

In researching the rise and the role of white boxes in the technology marketplace recently, I found either articles praising white boxes, or companies priding themselves that they don't use them.

What I didn't find was hard facts against white boxes.

For example:

  • Uptime is X% less [with White Boxes]
  • Y% of people say they received no support [with White Boxes or White Box suppliers]
  • Z% had hardware failures within the first 24 months [using White Boxes]

I've talked to distributors, and well as manufacturers, but both groups would only push their own products (of course).

Does anyone carer to share their experiences?

Where's the voice of dissent when it comes to White Boxes?

  • Whenever I can, I always like to roll my own. The real advantage for me is twofold. First, when it comes to parts, I get to put in exactly what I want. For example, I will always get a top of the line PSU no matter what other type of parts I use or what the box is for. Second, it makes troubleshooting so much easier. By the time I've cobbled everything together, installed OS, drivers and apps, I know it like the back of my hand. I guess it's mainly a psychological thing, but it makes a huge difference
