I said Darth Cheeto's executive orders were less rooted in law than what's come before and you think I support him? WTF? I said your statement supported the position you were replying to. That's not support, that's telling you you're supporting something almost, though not quite, as bad.

For the rest, I am pro-immigration (even asylum) but anti-unlawful immigration. I don't hold against people that they want better lives and will use any excuse to obtain them, but I do hold against people when they are responsible for upholding the law and not only fail to do so but subvert it (and then claim that they had nothing to do with creating the crisis). Yes, I hold that against both parties equally, and yes, that applies to where we are in terms of the economy, Iran, etc. I am not being partisan here.

"We couldn't get a law through congress so we did something questionably legal via executive order" is reinforcing the point being made by the grandparent (which, FWIW, I don't fully agree with. Many of Trump's executive orders are clearly less rooted in law than what's come before).

By the way, funny that you mention Sen. Kennedy in the context of immigration reform, who rather famously said: "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forth an amnesty bill like this." Yet here we are.

Washington Irving? Ambrose Bierce? Mark Twain?

Careful, you'll have terrified mathematicians crying about pathological monsters.

Same experience for me. I remember a slow day in the office back in 99 or 2000 (we'd just shipped a release) we got into an argument about typing speeds so set up typing tests for the whole team. My "my fingers never actually sit on the home keys, my hands relocate from time to time, and most of my typing is with three or four fingers and a thumb" ass clocked over 100wpm to the incredulity of the rest of the team.

Natural keyboards feel decidedly unnatural to me, because my hands always want to be somewhere they don't fit.

I have. Generally fall into two buckets: the ones that did everything themselves and learned, or the ones that only have a school education. The former generally know what they're talking about, the latter often have huge gaps in their knowledge. But that's true of the devs I interview, too, so I wouldn't place that stigma on the windows admins.

"Met" as in face to face? No, not really, but I've been on a lot of phone calls with the men who do the needful. Again, this ain't a windows thing.

Your use of the word "most" did not go unnoticed, and I am fully aware that the plural of "anecdote" is not "data." With that said, I have met plenty of people just like me in my career. I do not believe that "most" people running Windows shops" are "stupid and incapable." Some certainly are, but I've met plenty of dumb *IX people, too, especially back in the 90s.

I've met my share of assholes, too. Just saying.

Come the fuck on.

In my career, I have worked (professionally) with Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Linux, OS/2, SCO ODT/OSR, a bunch of shit I can't remember, and every Microsoft server platform since NT4. My current environment is 98% Microsoft. That doesn't make me stupid and incapable, that's just where my career took me.

Is... English not your first language? I ask because you appear to be way overthinking this.

The metaphor was perfectly clear to me when I read it.

Err... definitely not "regional slang." Literally the dictionary definition of the word "hatch" i.e. "to emerge from an egg."

So, welcome to (checks notes) 1967, I guess?

I'm Pro-nuclear power, but I do have to agree that "containment leak" is definitely a very understated way of saying "you can see the pretty blue light from kilometers away."

I don't believe today's models are AGI, but "not understanding cost" is a dangerous assumption to make. If you read the METR analysis of the Hugging Face attack, the agents used were very much aware of their own compute budgets and worked to maximize what the swarm had available to achieve the task.

Yeah, Schumer of all people whining about the surveillance state is absurd. Voted for the PATRIOT Act in 2001. Railed against Snowden a decade later. But, sure, Chuck, we totally believe you're on the side of the American People here, rather than simply being smart enough to realize that supporting Flock is a fast track to being voted out of office in the current climate (and a bipartisan one at that).

Qualified Immunity is a red herring. Don't get me wrong, it's a whole cloth creation of the Supreme Court that flies in the face of section 1983 and Congress should have fixed this problem decades ago, but QI is, first of all, limited to civil rather than criminal liability and, secondly, every police force in the country indemnifies its officers in the event of civil litigation that arises out of their actions.

If you want a real fix here, it's holding police accountable. Not throwing up hands and crying that "the big bad police union said that if we arrest officers for murder they'll go on strike, so what can we do?" Not only should their jobs not be protected when they commit obvious wrongdoing, they should be held to a higher standard in terms of criminal liability than Joe Citizen is in general. (Conversely, bona fide good faith error should be treated as just that).
