Journal nizo's Journal: Damn the torpedoes.... full speed ahead! 9

Well, I think the teacher talked me into it; I am gonna bag on the 300 level animation class and just skip ahead to the next 400 level class. I already own all the books I will need for both classes anyway, and in fact just bought the one for the 400 one and am already slogging through it on my own, so what the hell I might as well just go for it. The 300 level class is basically a rehash of the class I already took at the community college (not that a refresher would be bad) but dammit I want to learn the advanced stuff already.

Wow, my first 400 level class. And I am excited about the material even. So this is what it feels like to really want to learn something....

  • Eh, depending on how the class goes, most of my 400 level are still more about self-taught than about what I learned from lecture. Probably the most important thing I get from lectures is about documentation or diagrammatic structure. After that, it even seems like my profs don't want to teach you, they want you to learn on your own.

So if this is your first 400 class, does that mean you're still in your third year? If so, this oughta be fun. I've always liked the projects in the higher level classes at

  • It sounds waaaaay beyond my level 12 Paladin... :^b

I have two stories to share:

A long time ago, I wanted to get into (computer video) animation, and got a supportive email from a big hero of mine (who was basically running animation on all the major sci-fi stuff of the time, including B-5, most of the Trek stuff, and other programs). He basically said I could take classes and they'd be a good investment, but if I *really* wanted to get into it, I should get a really good PC, a copy of [software _____] and

Class numbering depends a lot on the university, but for many schools (enough that "101" is the stereotypical entry level course) the numbering for many "core" classes is X0Y where X is the year you're expected to take the course and Y is the semester, so you'd have math 101, math 102, math 201, math 202 and so on.

      • *Oooooohhhhhh*!!! I get it now! Thanks!

Though I have to admit, the idea of a level 400 'Animator' sounds Really *&#$in' KEWL!

      • Exactly, and one should also realize the numbering XYY is sometimes used.

Basically, at the Masters/PhD level courses are in the 500 and 600 level and beyond that it's mostly self-directed.

Congratulations - a passion worth burning for like that is something many never find.
(damn awkward grammar and prepositions, full ctrl-x edit aft!)

  • Awesome! We've been talking about things like this for awhile, so I am so glad you not only have these opportunities, but that you're grabbing them and running with them. kickass!

I think it's great that your teacher recognized that the standard sequence would be a hindrance for you.

    Good luck in the 400s!

  • In general, it doesn't start to get fun until the 400 level, provided you're actually interested in the degree you're going for.

Wait until you find out about 500 and 600 ...
