Submission + - UN Rights Expert Calls for Scrapping of Draft Wire (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: Italy has a draft law on surveillance and eavesdropping that could jeopardize journalists and threaten freedom of expression. The UN doesn't like it and they are calling for the abolition or revision of the bill. Anyone not accredited as a professional journalist can be imprisoned for up to four years for recording a conversation without the consent of the person involved and then publicizing that information. Four years seems a bit draconian, but people should know they are being recorded. Across Italy, journalists and citizens protested against the draft law, and some journalists went on strike. I couldn't discover what would trigger the maximum penalty. This is similar to a 2007 bill that was stopped — lobbyists never give up!

Submission + - UN Attacks Free Speech (newsblaze.com) 1

newsblaze writes: "The UN Human Rights Council Assaulted Free Expression today, in a 23-11 vote that urges member states to adopt laws outlawing criticism of religions. The proposal came to the UN from Pakistan, on behalf of the Organization for the Islamic Conference. There were 13 abstensions. South Korea, Japan, India, Mexico and Brazil, all strong democracies, allowed this to pass by abrogating their responsibility. While the resolution doesn't mention the online world, where does this subject get mentioned most, if not online."

Submission + - Disrupting television, will Murdoch sink the boat (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: "In the Media space, the internet has been threatening to be a highly disruptive technology for some time now. So far, it has disrupted newspapers, who still don't understand the internet, but because there are a lot of (mostly older) people who like to have the paper in their hands, newspapers are holding on. When Murdoch bought Myspace, I wondered how long it would be before he either found something to do with it — or gave up. Now it seems Murdoch has found a way to leverage his position — More Space for MySpace — and put a massive squeeze on television. How far can he take this — and what will be the result?"

Submission + - China systematically develops technology

newsblaze writes: "China, having recognized there are major gaps in its science and technology arsenal, released their Technology Development Plans. The plans cover five main areas — geology, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering and aeronautical engineering. Three areas are prioritized in space technology and six major goals are announced. All this comes after having first set out their 100 Year Vision of Greatness. They appear to be giving themselves a breathing space, telling the world they are interested in cooperation and also giving themselves a major target, in much the same way as John F Kennedy did for the USA."
