How CDNs and Alternative DNS Services Combine For Higher Latency 187

However, as more websites, particularly smaller ones, use content distribution networks via embedded ads, widgets, and other assets, the effectiveness of non-ISP DNS servers may be undermined. Why? Because CDNs rely on the location of a user's DNS server to determine the closest server with the hosted content. Sajal Kayan published a series of test results which demonstrates the difference, and also provided the Python script used so you can test which is the most effective DNS service for your own Internet connection."

The RIAA's new plan to enlist ISPs in its war on file sharing, once it announced it was calling a halt to new consumer lawsuits, is running into rough sledding. Wired reports on the continuing legal murkiness of the RIAA's interpretation of copyright law. And one small ISP in Louisiana asks the recording organization, "You want me to police your intellectual property? What's your billing address?"

I've been using Skype for about a year now and have been waiting for this feature just as long.

I just downloaded 1.0, bought 10 EUR of credits costing 11.5 EUR including Swedish VAT.

Being midnight in Sweden, I had no one to call so I asked my girlfriend to go into another room to test it with my own phone. The sound quality was very good.

Actually, the first call I made was to my girlfriend (in the same room as the computer) 5 minutes earlier before I told her about it. I turned down the computer sound so she couldn't hear that I was calling. When she answered I turned up the sound so she could hear her own voice echoing from the computer speakers. She got really scared and hung up before realizing what actually happened.

According to Richard C. Hoagland NASA may have accidently set off a nuclear explosion on Jupiter when they sent the Galileo probe plummeting into its depths.

A fascinating idea, and the background information is very interesting on its own. However Hoagland's tendancy towards conspiracy theories makes him an unreliable source. In so many ways...

Nelson Minar thinks so. According to him Python has reached the point that you can create the same kind of quick and dirty Windows applications VB is best suited for. He has pointers to lots of good Windows Python tools.

Some time ago SF writer Bruce Sterling gave up his blog on my friend Eileen Gunn's webzine Infinite Matrix in order to start a new blog for Wired magazine. This trend towards subsidized blogs is an interesting one and I hope it brings enough value to continue (and perhaps be extended to 'regular' bloggers like myself).
