Submission + - Canada's Ebola Vaccine Nets Millions for Tiny US Biotech Firm (thestar.com) 1

Anita Hunt (lissnup) writes: Iowa-based NewLink Genetics has secured a US$50million deal with pharmaceutical giant Merck for the experimental Ebola vaccine developed by Canadian government scientists. NewLink bought the exclusive commercial licensing rights to Canada’s VSV-EBOV in 2010 with a milestone payment of just US$205,000. This is an interesting new twist in a story previously discussed on /. and which continues to draw media attention.

Submission + - FOI Request reveals UK Houses of Parliament workers' passion for adult content (independent.co.uk)

Anita Hunt (lissnup) writes: Hot on the heels of Dave Cameron's demands to make such content universally "opt-in", the Independent reports "Westminster computers were prevented from accessing sex sites 114,844 times last November alone and on 55,552 in April, while February saw just 15 and in June officials blocked 397 attempts." No explanation has been offered for the variation, although it would be interesting to know if the fall in the number of recorded/reported attempts coincides with the date the FOI request was filed.

Submission + - How to compete with NSA by hacking a Verizon network extender

Anita Hunt (lissnup) writes: This snooping hack-in-a-backpack could become a hot Summer accessory, since Reuters reported that "researchers at iSec hacked into a Verizon network extender, which anyone can buy online, and turned it into a cell phone tower small enough to fit inside a backpack capable of capturing and intercepting all calls, text messages and data sent by mobile devices within range" complete with video interview
