Japanese Game Developers Go West 84

donniebaseball23 writes "More and more Japanese game studios and publishers are looking toward the West. But as the industry becomes more global, is this really such a bad thing? From the article: 'Gameplay is an art that transcends borders, and it simply makes good business sense to keep your eyes open for opportunities no matter where they present themselves, as Zenimax, EA and THQ clearly have. Far from ruining the Japanese gaming industry, it may in fact save some of the best Japanese developers from considering retirement or a career change. They'll be able to make games on their own terms with their own original IP, and shouldn't it ultimately be about these creative types being able to realize their visions?""

Chip Allows Blind People To See 231

crabel writes "3 blind people have been implanted with a retinal chip that allowed them to see shapes and objects within days of the procedure. From the article: 'One of the patients surprised researchers by identifying and locating objects on a table; he was also able to walk around a room unaided, approach specific people, tell the time from a clock face, and describe seven different shades of gray in front of him.'"

Comment use automated script systematically (Score 1) 396

I use automated script systematically to test every features I wrote, making the job much easier.

And I do it immediately, or even while writing it, while it's fresh in my mind and usually easy to do, checking for normal and abnormal conditions. The script test for new and also the old functions, making sure everything is still OK.

Being proud of my code is a good motivator to ensure that no bugs are found.

Comment Why not pump the oil at the surface into a tank? (Score 1) 343

I have 2 questions:

1) Why they don't use those oil eating microbes???

2) Why they don't pump this oil at the surface of the sea and put it into a super tanker??? Some water would get pump at the same time, but simply let the mixture sit a little while and the water will drop at the bottom could be pump back into the sea afterward. It certainly would not be perfect but it sure could recover a lot of the oil fairly quickly at a relatively low cost.

The Wackiest Technology Tales of 2008 97

coondoggie writes "Despite the daily drumbeat of new and improved hardware or software, the tech industry isn't all bits and bytes. Some interesting things happen along the way too. Like floating data centers, space geekonauts, shape shifting robots and weird bedfellows (like Microsoft and Jerry Seinfeld). What we include here is an example of what we thought were the best, slightly off-center stories of 2008."

Comment Garbage can go a long way (Score 1) 127

Currently all my city is doing with the methane that come from its garbage dumb is to burn it in order to reduce odors, but they are planning soon to add a generator, that will:

- get rid of a gaz that is 20 times worst than CO2 at creating the greenhouse effect
- generate electricity from a fuel that is free, and since the electricity is local, it reduces transmission line loses, and create local jobs.
- the heat generated will be used to heat a greenhouse during the winter, and so create jobs and reduce transportation fees and fuel.
- and create revenues for the city.

Not bad for something that was just a nuisance.

Journal Journal: Farewell

I decided to leave this site for numerous reasons, most include its degradation... I am not even sure today's stories reach Jon Katz's which already were lame.
The fact is that everybody now consider Slashdot as an acquired entertainment site... A "Reference" even though we should rather look at its evolution...

I was just wondering how many of the Slashdotters were actually Believers, how many were Agnostics, Atheists... For example, Larry Wall is a Christian while Amnon Barak is Jewish. Well, I just wanted to get an unbiaised idea of your relation to ${DEITY}.
