Journal insanecarbonbasedlif's Journal: HHGTTG - discussion 25

From the front page, there is a new trailer at Amazon for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

This is definately a notch more informative than the first teaser trailer, which had no actors or dialogue on screen, just a voiceover of some CG. I like what I see so far, but of course, I would go see this movie even if it looked terrible. I just like Adams' books that much. I won't be first in line on April 29th, though, I always go to the theater at least two weeks after opening, if not a month later. Less of a rush, easier to find good seating, and all that.

Anyhow, what do you all think of it? Zaphod's head, Marvin's cute astheatic(sp?)? Any of you going to see it? Opening weekend? Not going to see it? Why not?

This calls for a poll:

I am going to see HHGTTG:

1) on midnight of the opening day!
2) at a sane hour (10am to 9pm) on opening day!
3) whenever my pack of friends goes.
4) on the opening weekend.
5) in the first week.
6) in the second week.
7) while it's still in theaters, after the hype has died down.
8) on DVD.
9) when the first seed hits BT.
9.33) when it comes out on cable TV.
9.66) when it comes out on broadcast TV.
10) never!

Qualifier to choice from above:

a) Even if no one likes it!
b) If the critics like it!
c) If slashdot likes it!
d) If my friends like it!

i'm still trying to get my wife to read it. she better hurry because i'm feeling like reading it again.
    • Breaking the rules - I'm 7a.

My wife started reading Adams, but just didn't get into it. Of course, she likes the bits that I share with her, but she doesn't really like it as a cohesive literary experience.
  • The week before release from some 0day WaReZ site. I'm too old and paranoid for warez anymore (besides, who needs warez when you've got OSS?). I do remember watching episode 4 a couple weeks before release.
  • if I can help it.
  • I just started reading the books again... surely I'll be done by then.
  • Depending more on the eagerness of the person I'll probably go with to see it. I loved the books, but see no reason to rush to plunk down $10 to be a captive audience for 30 minutes of advertising. (30 minutes doesn't count the "radio" heard while standing in line that advertises movie tunes, but it does count the slide show, theater ads, and TV-style ads the precede the previews/trailers).

Personally, I'd rather wait till it hits DVD and rent it ... unless a), b), c) and d) say it is a must-see on the bi
  • Maily because my girlfriend doesn't like SF... The b) part is mainly because I like what I saw in the trailer.
  • I've seen it on DVD. It was also on TV years ago. And before that it was on the radio. Somewhere in between the radio play and the TV series it was published in dead-tree format.

Of course, all of the above were British because Douglas Adams was an englishman and his characters appeal to those who understand British culture. Arthur Dent is the archetypical englishman thrust into exactly the sort of situations that an englishman is not raised to cope with.

I will never go to see an americanised version. It j
  • Anyone want the torrent file?

    just kidding.

I don't even know if it is done with post-production yet.

    When is it due out?

Because I'm too lazy to find out for myself.

I'll probably go if/when my pack of friends wants to go.
I'm halfway dreading it because Disney produced it.
    (Keeping fingers crossed though.)

    Probably.

If the Yahoo Movies, User Reviews (not critics) gives it an A rating, I might choose 5 or 6.
