FBI Is Behind Mysterious Flights Over US Cities 167

New submitter kaizendojo sends a report from the Associated Press indicating the FBI has a small fleet of planes that fly across the U.S. carrying surveillance equipment. The planes are registered with fictitious companies to hide their association with the U.S. government. The FBI says they're only used for investigations that are "specific" and "ongoing," but they're often used without getting permission from a judge beforehand. "Some of the aircraft can also be equipped with technology that can identify thousands of people below through the cellphones they carry, even if they're not making a call or in public. Officials said that practice, which mimics cell towers and gets phones to reveal basic subscriber information, is rare." The AP identified at least 50 FBI-controlled planes, which have done over 100 flights since late April. The AP adds that they've seen the planes "orbiting large, enclosed buildings for extended periods where aerial photography would be less effective than electronic signals collection."

It isn't just the US that does this, here in Canada we deal with the same crap. If you end up in university you are doomed to be in debt for the rest of your life. Personally I went to college, and yes I am working in my field, however over 90% of the people that graduated with me ended up not getting a job and went to back to school or ended up in a dead end job just to make the bills.

Windows 8 Changes Host File Blocking 1030

An anonymous reader writes "Windows 8 has been confirmed to not only ignore, but also modify the hosts file. As soon as a website that should be blocked is accessed, the corresponding entry in the hosts file is removed, even if the hosts file is read-only. The hosts file is a popular, cross-platform way of blocking access to certain domains, such as ad-serving websites."

Have fun with Enmax, their stability record is pretty awesome. Try getting any kind of service on a weekend, their noc number on the weekends goes to a pager and they will call you back within the hour. I deal with them so often it isn't funny. And watch out, they contract out the last mile in many of their build out. Their like using telus and shaw and the best, they won't tell you.

Man Tries To Live an Open Source Life For a Year 332

jfruh writes "Sam Muirhead, a New Zealand filmmaker living Berlin, will, on the 1st of August, begin an experiment in living an open source life for a year. But this is going way beyond just trading in his Mac for a Linux machine and Final Cut Pro for Novacut. He's also going to live in a house based on an open source design, and he notes that trying to develop and use some form of open source toilet paper will be an "interesting and possibly painful process.""

Submission + - Can AI Games Create Super-intelligent Humans? (acceler8or.com)

destinyland writes: A technology CEO sees game artificial intelligence as the key to a revolution in education, predicting a synergy where games create smarter humans who then create smarter games. Citing lessons drawn from Neil Stephenson's "The Diamond Age," Alex Peake, founder of Primer Labs, sees the possibility of a self-fueling feedback loop which creates "a Moore's law for artificial intelligence," with accelerating returns ultimately generating the best possible education outcomes. "What the computer taught me was that there was real muggle magic..." writes Peake, adding "Once we begin relying on AI mentors for our children and we get those mentors increasing in sophistication at an exponential rate, we're dipping our toe into symbiosis between humans and the AI that shape them."

Well considering he did rip the music and dump it into a file sharing program does make you think he might have been trying to allow for sharing of these files. However after thinking about it, how many of these programs offer a media player aspect? A lot of them do, and I remember back in college how many people would be using Kazaa as their media player. One could say that he was on the understanding that if he places all his music in the My Shared Folder, it all shows up in Kazaa and he can then listen to it all. Not really much of a reach at all consider we are talking about Joe Six Pack here.

Building Artificial Bone 78

Late-Eight writes "Researchers from the National University of Singapore, have recently developed a new way to make artificial bone from mineralised collagen. For some time scientists have tried to make nanosized artificial bone materials using various methods, And have recently turned their attention to mineralised collagen, a nanoapatite/collagen composite. This material is highly biocompatible and has the nanostructure of artificial bone. It could be used in bone grafts and bone-tissue engineering, among other applications."
