Most any web form can and will be abused by spamming robots, especially if they think it has something to do with email, news letters included. Often the robots will start attacking a form without a person looking at it to determine if it's actually useful to a spammer or not.

I have no love for CAPTCHAs ether, and I've had to write them.

But I don't have surge protector on all outlets, and these consumer-grade devices don't cover things like 220 volt appliances. Add to that the fact that I live in a lightning-prone area and it's only a matter of time before one of my expensive devices has a major meltdown. I've looked into full-home surge protectors that install next to the fuse box but the prices vary widely and I have no idea how reliable they are or what brands are good. An electrician friend tells me they can still blow out, and when they do they're difficult to replace if they were installed behind a wall.

Can anybody shed some light on the best options for protecting all the electronics in my house with a single surge protector?

There are plenty of free to use recursive DNS services available that you could use, or you could run a local recursive DNS server.

Exactly my point. . . If Windows had a unified update system, you wouldn't have that problem.

But, every app that needs an update system installs it's own.

I think the difference is that with Windows, you have to install updates from Microsoft via one method, updates to Adobe software via another method, updates to Firefox by another method. Lots of things for the user to learn, there isn't just a click one thing and it updates everything.

My Linux box on the other hand, does have quite a few updates, and requires updating often, but, it's just one interface to update everything, including from third party vendors (i.e. Adobe)
