Journal eglamkowski's Journal: tires 7

My car's tires look low. I mean, I know they're supposed to look a little low, but they look lower then that even. Yet, when I use one the cheesy little pressure gauge I have, they come up at 35 psi, where 30-35 is what is litsted in my owner's manual. That was after the car sat overnight, some 12 hours without driving. Hmmm... Should I get a better gauge, or can I trust those types of gauges?

  • What kind of car/truck, what kind of wheels, and what kind of tires?
    • It's a Honda Civic, 2001 4 door LX. The wheels are what came with the car (don't know the specifics), but I just recently (last Dec) had some Turanza LS tires put on (I forget if they're LS-H or LS-T).
  • Considering that we are coming out of the really cold weather in North America it probably makes sense that they are a little high.
    I found this [msgroup.org]
A tire's pressure can change by 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change.

I tend to believe my cheap little gauge, mainly because I verified it against a couple other cheap little gauges and they all read about the same. Stop at a full service gas station and ask the attendant if you can borrow his gauge, then compare that to what your gauge sa
  • I don't trust those cheesy pressure gages. I use a digital one. I can't remember where I purchased it from but I'm sure they're easy to find. I've had it for years and haven't had to change the battery.
    • I have a cheap gauge I use. It seems pretty spot on.

I know it's more accurate than the ones on the hoses at the gas station or one on a tire pump.

It reads fairly close to the digital one my bike mechanic has.
  • I have a small dial gauge that I use. But I used pencil types for years with no problems. There is nothing inherently wrong with a pencil gauge. If it concerns you, get another pencil gauge (should only be $2 or so) or a dial gauge (start at about $5). If both/all of them agree, you're okay.

  • I use an expensive digital, _and_ an el cheapo... I don't trust no stinking gauges. Gotta get a 2nd opinion. :)
