Journal dshaw858's Journal: Is Yahoo! Making A Comeback? 7

Has anyone noticed Yahoo suddenly popped up back in the game? Last I checked (a few months ago), Yahoo was an old, dying search engine and email service getting dominated by Google in every way. Now, all of a sudden, it seems as though Yahoo might be coming back into our lives. Yahoo released a Video Search System, can support realtime traffic analysis, has enhanced their search engine and has upped their email to compete with Google's GMail. Meanwhile, Google is experimenting with more USENET dominance with their enhanced Google Groups, and the mind-blowing Google Suggest Thing. It used to look like a battle between Google and the world, with Yahoo sitting on the sidelines twiddling it's thumbs and slowing disappearing. It looks now like that could be wrong, and Yahoo could come back. What are your thoughts on this, if you have any?

I use metacrawler.com, which searches both Yahoo and Google, as well as a few others. I think they own Dogpile too (or is it Dogpile that owns MC?). I still prefer MetaCrawler, though.
  • Yahoo is my home page, and it has been since 1995. Back then they had the only decent search engine; Altavista had a much larger index, but it was nearly impossible to find relevant results.

I almost switched away from Yahoo a few years back when it became evident they were short on cash (post-bubble) and had to rely on those terrible X10 pop-unders. I should note, though, that I haven't used Yahoo as a search engine in years. Google is far superior in that respect, and because it's now intergrated right in
    • Google is far superior in that respect, and because it's now intergrated right into Firefox, it's quite easy to access.

      What about this [luniac.com]?

About the Google fad thing, I think you might be right- I like Google a lot, but it does have a sort of "fad" effect... and fads die.
  • I dunno, it's a hard thing to tell. I used to use Yahoo! all the time, until Google came out. While people do mash on Google's search algorithm, really, no one has more content. For most of my searches, Google produces at least as many, if not more, immediately relevant results. Google isn't so much of a fad as a kind of new thing.

I also think it helps Yahoo! that they now seem to have some kind of tie-in with a few of the bigger media conglomerates, such as Fox, and have access to some of their content.
  • Google seems to be as strong as ever, but lately has been updating features most people don't know exist. You can ask most anoyone (besides the guys in your little geek club) what a newsgroup is, and the will have no idea. The desktop search tool is wonderful, but needs work. Thats where google needs to continue. Get its name on the desktop, show up MS's ruimentary search, and people will grow to like it more and more. Of course, Yahoo will be trying to do the same thing.... There are three outcomes to thi
