I have posted maybe 5 questions total in my entire career, answered about the same number, due to this exact issue. They're not dying because of AI only, but because they make it too hard to engage if you are the kind of person who develops expertise and not the kind of person who develops the ability to deal with their bull.

I also just logged into my Slashdot account for the first time in probably 5-10 years to post this comment. Because F*UCK the haters. These are just TOOLS. It's how you use them that matters. Using them to copy someone else is BULLSHIT. Using them to hit your OWN VISION is appropriate.

I suggest looking into the Bilt application: http://buildadatabaseapp.com/ It's a fairly easy to extend system built for creating adhoc shared database applications without having to write any code. You could use a bit of custom PHP on top of it to integrate into whatever public forms or whatever you need to pull data from. All your operators and employees would only need to interact with the UI provided by Bilt.

This can work for short periods of time, up to a couple of weeks IF you pay an overtime bonus to the sallaried employees. My company does this and most people actually look forward to the infrequent times when it is needed because we are well compensated for it (in addition to our profit sharing program).

DARPA To Turn Humans Into Batteries 183

DARPA is working on a project that will convert energy from the human body to power a variety of military gadgets. From the article: "Obviously, our bodies generate heat — thermal energy. They also produce vibrations when we move — kinetic energy. Both forms of energy can be converted into electricity. Anantha Chandrakasan, an MIT electrical engineering professor, who is working on the problem with a former student named Yogesh Ramadass, says the challenge is to harvest adequate amounts of power from the body and then efficiently direct it to the device that needs it." If I remember the movie correctly, this didn't turn out so well for the humans.

Volume Shadow Copy For Linux? 300

An anonymous reader writes "I was asked to manage a number of Linux servers at work. I would like to use volume snapshots to improve my backup scripts and keep recent copies of data around for quick restore. I normally manage Windows servers and on those I would just use Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy for this. I tried Linux LVM snapshots, but most of the servers I manage run regular partitions with ext3 file systems, so LVM snapshots will not work. I found some versioning file systems out there like ext3cow and Tux3. Those look interesting, but I need something I can use on my existing ext3 file systems. I also found the R1Soft Hot Copy command-line utility, but it does not yet support my older 2.4 Linux servers. What are you using to make snapshots on Linux?"

Not if their decisions shapes text books all over the country. Not if they are receiving any Federal funding for their schools.

If they want to blur the line between church and state, and between facts and politics, then surely they won't mind the Federal Government taking away funding. After all, the Church will pick up the slack, right:)?

I have to admit though, living in an ultra-blue state (Oregon), it would be amusing to see my communities reaction to receiving a K-12 set of "Texanized" books.
