Sea water contains both Uranium and Tritium, caused by NATURE. Providing the mix is done sufficiently slowly the Tritium will go below a measurable threshold. The important lesson learned is that it is not a good idea to use water as a primary coolant. Very high temperature reactors use Helium, which makes them safer than water reactors.

The charts do not demonstrate the total cost to the consumer. There is only one way to determine this cost, look at the wholesale electricity price, this can be found here (coupled to the German market): http://belpex.be/marketdata/dam/public/images/CWE-MCP-Chart-FP-Big.html you can see the price is dropping when the sun is shining. Solar is being subsidised as the holy grail. Even the government cannot continue to swim against these market currents. It is better to look at alternatives like gas-(or wood pellet)-cogeneration, saves large amounts of CO2, this has at least got some flexibility in it, and it can be produced during "expensive periods". Wholesale prices have a lower boundary at +- 17-20 Euro per Mega Watt hour, an upper boundary of +- 60. Have a look at your bill and tell me "what explains the difference ??". This is all about excessive overhead in ex-government monopolies with some juice of unrealistic greenery on top. Nothing to see with a technical solution.

Actually using a patent is an important condition for claiming ownership. Has this patent been used anywhere else ?? Looking at the size of the company and incorporation it hasn't been used anywhere else, or do I get this wrong ?? Maybe there is a history of how this company acquired this patent ?? Being able to demonstrate use should be the first conditions for attacking bigger (other) parties. If it has not been used elsewhere (if other people did not cough up any money during the first 17 years of its existence), this is a troll. So I (not a lawyer) would ignore this and sleep well, this looks like spam.

The interview talks about 300 MW of power inside the island. During a total of 3 Hours every day, two times 1.5 hours per day. How much return for the invested energy, is this at 100 % or maybe only 80 % or 40 % "Dredgers" should be facing some return for their investment like this. Not enough parameters to make a full scale bet I would say. Right now wind energy is increasing the spread on the Belpex prices. How much lower will the spread become if the "island" is introduced, are there other technologies to achieve the same??

Couple of years ago the nearby town of Knokke was trying to build a yacht-harbour and build a similar construction along the Zeebrugge harbour. Their intention was to finance the needed dike by selling premium apartments (with a premium sea-view). They could never convince the politicians, public and the investors together. In the past the same Belgian legal system had great difficulty with persistent individual offenders, having hard proof in its hands. This time it is fighting against an organised group, with good funding, myself I do not recall of any success in similar situations. Most likely numerous appeals, postponements and procedure battles will follow. My personal guestimate is that the European court of human rights is minimum 5 years away from today. Lets pray the Belgian courts have got some pride and boy-scouts left, as this did sometimes work in the past.

Journal Journal: Why Republicans MUST go off the "cliff" 3

I've been laughing about this all month, people really expected a deal. Two words explain why a pre-2013 deal is impossible: Grover Norquist. A quarter century ago when federal taxes were quite a bit higher than the present "lower than ever in your lifetime" tax rates, he convinces a very large number of Republicans to swear to never raise taxes. If they make a deal with the Democrats now, they've gone back on their word.

Submission + - How artifical leaves could generate clean hydrogen (guardian.co.uk)

Anonymous Coward writes: "At Imperial College London, researchers have embarked on a £1m project to study, and eventually mimic, photosynthesis. Part of a project called the "artificial leaf", involves working out exactly how leaves use sunlight to make useful molecules. The team then plans to build artificial systems that can do the same to generate clean fuels such as hydrogen and methanol. These would then be used in fuel cells to make electricity or directly to power super-clean vehicles."
