Submission + - Intel's Alder Lake Reviewed: 12th Gen Core Processors Bring Fight Back To AMD (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: After months of speculation and early look teases, Intel's 12th Gen Core processors are finally ready for prime time. Today marks the embargo lift for independent reviews of Alder Lake and it's clear Chipzilla is back and bringing the fight again versus chief rival AMD. Intel 12th Gen Core processors incorporate two new CPU core designs, dubbed Efficiency (E-core) and Performance (P-core). In addition to this new hybrid core architecture, 12th Gen Core processors and the Z690 motherboard chipset platform also feature support for the latest memory and IO technologies, including PCI Express Gen 5, DDR5, Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E. The new Core i9-12900K features a monolithic, 16-core (24-thread) die with 8 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores, while the Core i5-12600K has 10 cores / 16-threads, comprised of 6 P-cores and 4 E-cores. Alder Lake E-cores don't support HyperThreading but P-cores can process two threads simultaneously while E-cores can manage only one, hence the asymmetric core counts. In the benchmarks, the 16-core Core i9-12900K doesn't sweep AMD's 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X across the board in multi-threaded tests, but it certainly competes very well and notches plenty of victories. In the lightly-threaded tests though, it's a much clearer win for Intel and gaming is an obvious strong point as well. Alder Lake's performance cores are as fast as they come. The $589 (MSRP) 16-core Core i9-12900K competes well with the $750 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, and the $289 10-core Core i5-12600K has a lower MSRP than a $299 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X. The new Core i5's power and performance look great too, especially when you consider this $289 chip outruns Intel's previous-gen flagship Core i9-11900K more often than not, and it smokes a Ryzen 5 5600X.

Submission + - Ransomware gang tries to extort Apple hours ahead of Spring Loaded event (therecord.media)

An anonymous reader writes: The operators of the REvil ransomware are demanding that Apple pay a ransom demand to avoid having confidential information leaked on the dark web. The REvil crew claims it came into possession of Apple product data after breaching Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese company that is the biggest laptop manufacturer in the world and which is also one of the companies that assemble official Apple products based on pre-supplied product designs and schematics.

The REvil gang posted 21 screenshots depicting Macbook schematics and threatened to publish new data every day until May 1, or until Apple or Quanta pay the ransom demand. The extortion attempt was also perfectly timed for maximum visibility to coincide with the Spring Loaded event, where Apple announced new products and software updates.

alaskana98 writes: In a recently released investigative piece at the site 'The War Zone', official US Navy ship logs were obtained by multiple FOIA requests that reveal US Navy Warships were the apparent target of mysterious drone-like UAPs in 2019 off the coast of California:

"In July of 2019, a truly bizarre series of events unfolded around California's Channel Islands. Over a number of days, groups of unidentified aircraft, which the U.S. Navy simply refers to as 'drones' or 'UAVs,' pursued that service's vessels, prompting a high-level investigation. During the evening encounters, as many as six aircraft were reported swarming around the ships at once. The drones were described as flying for prolonged periods in low-visibility conditions, and performing brazen maneuvers over the Navy warships near a sensitive military training range less than 100 miles off Los Angeles."

Ship logs reveal that visual sightings of the objects were described as hovering "white lights" or "red flashing lights". During some of these events, 'SNOOPIE' (essentially specialized Navy recon) teams were deployed to conduct more detailed observations.

In a tangential development, photos and videos, also from 2019, were recently obtained by investigative filmmaker Jeremy Corbell that claim to show unclassified Navy photos and a video of UAPs (including a bizarre glowing triangle) taken from US Navy ships. They can be seen here.

Submission + - Astronomers detect a bright-blue bridge of stars, and it's about to blow (livescience.com)

fahrbot-bot writes: Astrophysicists have found a new region of the Milky Way, and it's filled with searingly hot, bright-blue stars that are about to explode.

The researchers were creating the most detailed map yet of the star-flecked spiral arms of our galactic neighborhood with the European Space Agency's (ESA) Gaia telescope when they discovered the region, which they have named the Cepheus spur, they reported in a new study.

Nestled between the Orion Arm — where our solar system is— and the constellation Perseus, the spur is a belt between two spiral arms filled with enormous stars three times the size of the sun and colored blue by their blistering heat.

Astronomers call these giant, blue stars OB stars due to the predominantly blue wavelengths of light that they emit. They are the rarest, hottest, shortest-living and largest stars in the entire galaxy. The violent nuclear reactions taking place inside their hearts make them six times hotter than the sun. And the enormous stellar explosions that end their lives — called supernovas — scatter the heavy elements essential for complex life far into the galaxy.

Submission + - UFO Disclosure Group Releases Newest Navy F/A-18 Superhornet UFO Encounter Video (cnn.com)

alaskana98 writes: CNN and other media outlets are reporting that 'To The Stars Academy of Arts and Science' group has released the third in a series of videos purportedly showing an encounter between Navy F/A-18 Superhornet pilots and an object moving at seemingly impossible speeds off the East Coast of the United States. The video was captured by the Raytheon Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared (ATFLIR) pod and includes audio of the pilots excitedly observing this object from far above as it zooms over the ocean surface. The ATFLIR system has trouble getting a lock on the object at first but then gets a lock on it eventually demonstrating that whatever this this was it wasn't a figment of the pilots imaginations.
