Journal Timex's Journal: Every day should be Veteran's Day. 8

No, this isn't on my personal blog. Wife pointed me at this. In case it moves or changes in time, here's the interesting bit:

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America', for an amount of 'up to and including his life.'

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

I might add that often, the decision to write that check is made whether or not the individual believes in the sitting administration's policies. The decision is made because of the belief in the underlying system of government.

So... Veterans? Thanks for everything... Honestly. :)

  • I'd hasten to add, though, that quite a few folks in the "first responders" category are equally worthy of thanks.

Lawyers, politicians, actors, news media types: maybe. ;)
  • I signed up for the Army right after high school, more for my own benefit (I was lazy, low GPA, undisciplined, etc.) than anything else. But, I have always believed in our form of government and our country. I spent 3 years plus training time on active duty. Never did see any action besides storm cleanup, but I was always ready and willing to go, even with Bill Clinton as President.

If I had to do it over again, I would. I might choose the Air Force if I did it over again, but still would join the milita
  • He was in the Army, and when I thanked him on Veteran's Day, he rebuked me. He never saw combat, never got shot at. He said "Don't thank me. Thank someone who is a veteran of combat."

I think for him, he had an idea of what should be honored, and it wasn't him. He wanted that to go to the people for whom that check was cashed, so to speak.

But yes - the people who sign up do deserve to be recognized for their willingness to sacrifice it all.

Not only did my oldest step son sign up, he got shot (and the kid

If I drank, I'd buy you enough to get your fill for the day, but I don't. <shrug>
