Journal TechnoLust's Journal: /. journal experiment (I need your help, it won't take long) 36

Just a quick experiment to satisfy my curiosity...

Question:
How many people read my journal?

Hypothesis:
I hypothesize that I have about 50 readers on average. This number is derived from the fact that I have 45 fans, and 19 friends that aren't fans, and I get trolled on occasion, so I added 5 for trolls and random passer-bys. I probably have more than that, but I imagine not all of my fans read EVERY journal I write, so it balances out.

Procedure:
I wrote this journal entry and ask you to help. If you are reading this, please post a reply. It doesn't have to be long, just reply and tell me the first journal you read (so I know how long you've been reading) and anything else you want to. If you don't remember which was the first journal you read, at least give me an estimate, or just say, "I don't know." I would appreciate if you would post logged in, but for any regulars that don't want to devuldge their identitiy, at least post AC and tell me you read and when you started.

I hope everyone will participate, and I will tally the results and post them in a journal as soon as this one is archived. Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't remember why I started reading your journal. hope this helps :)

  • but not always the whole thing. Like I remember back when you got an x-box, I read some of the stuff since I'm moderately interested in what others think (especially back when it was new) but I never really thought I'd get one so it wasn't of great concern.

I had discovered the whole friend/foe thing back before they put the little dots to pick your feelings about people. I just one day noticed a link in my profile about friends and soon I figured out how to add peoeple. I used the standard add method (book marked) and added their handle, so I think I had had a slew of friends / foes before others knew it was possible. I also had the messaging turned on right away to get info when others had journals going (I remember now, those with journals had easy way to add friends, the trick was adding friends/foes of those who didn't have journals).

May I ask why this is important to you?
    • Actually, it isn't that important, but I'm a very curious person, and I have a wide variety of people responding to my journals. But I know that a lot of people do not comment, even though they read it. Basically it boils down to the fact that I was extremely bored at work, and started wondering how many people read my journal. I thought this would be the easiest way to get a good idea. Also, I thought other people might be interested in knowing, as I assume my readership is average, maybe on the high side, but definitely not as high as Fort Knox's. :-)
  • i dont know how long i've been reading, and i dont know why i started reading. probably becuase I saw something interesting in your journal and decided to read more of it.

  • I find your journals very interesting and insightful. Keep it up!
    • I find your journals very interesting and insightful.

Hey, this is slashdot -- you have to pick one or the other of those two adjectives, you can't have both :-)

  • I just started reading yours. I am familiar with your posting on Marotti.com so I added you here. (FYI- I'm "greg" on marotti).
  • You did mention to me when you started writing, and I've been reading ever since.
  • Well at some point I added you to my friends list. I get the little e-mail from /. when a friend posts a journal entry and I usually click on the link. How much attention I pay to the page after clicking is a more complex question :-)

Scrolling back through your journal entries, the earliest one I recognize is June 1st

    • which is about when you were added to my friends list.
    • not really... I have never approached a girl with, "You know, I have a Karma of 50 on /. and 50 people read my journal." It just doesn't seem like that would impress anyone. If I wanted to massage my ego, I would just think of appearing on my roommate's radio show, which I have appeared on live twice and a few others via a recorded segment. My roommate does a radio show called "15 Minutes of Fame" which is heard in NYC, Rochester, Santa Fe, Findlay OH, and broadcasts over the internet. The show has an estimated average listenership of 300,000 to 500,000.

I think speaking to up to half a million people is a little more of an ego boost than a journal on slahdot. :-)

But I understand how it might seem like I would be massaging my ego. I tend to collect statistics on things [slashdot.org] for no apparent reason. I just like numbers. I remember the IP addresses of the routers in every company I've every worked for. (Because you never know. :-) ) I calculate my gas mileage every time I fill the tank, although it is always 32 or 33 mpg in the summer (because of the AC, I think) and 34 or 35 mpg in the winter.

I'm also a "people watcher" aka amateur behavioral psychologist. I love to hypothesize about people reasons for their behaviour.

      BTW - Thanks for participating.

      • "You know, I have a Karma of 50 on /. and 50 people read my journal."

How do you know your exact karma anymore? Mine just shows up as "excellent". It would be interesting if the word for the top range changed from time to time, it would mess with people's heads. If they were very concerned about their karma that is.

Anyhow, I was joking with my comment about ego. If I had been serious I probably woulnd't have replied at all.

ps I enjoyed the hacking story.

        • Yeah, I thought you might be joking, but I wanted to work that fact that I've been on radio in there. :-) j/k

As for Karma, that's easy. When last I could see my score, I had a 50. I can go to the your info page and see all the comments I've posted since then. None have been modded down. If someone were obsessed with their Karma (I could give a rat's behind) they could go in and add/subtract all the mod points from the total before it was obfuscated. The only assumption one would have to make is that the 50 point Karma cap is still on. If it is, you can't add anymore points. If it isn't, you can.

I'm glad you enjoyed the hacking story. I enjoyed remembering it. That's why I think someone would like to read a book loosely based my experiences. I have many other stories like that. I have also had many experiences that would interesting to non computer people. I've been cliff diving, I've traveled, college was wild, psycho exgirlfriends, etc. I've really enjoyed living my life, and I think others might enjoy reading about it.

  • I can't remember when I started reading your journal, its been a while though. Back when the journals were first getting started I'd click on the "last journal entry" link in any comment I saw it in... Plus I'm a fairly regular reader of FortKnox's journal and marotti.com.
  • I've been reading your journal for a long time. Maybe since you said something interesting replying to someone else's journal. I think it might have been banky's.

    • Oops. Forgot part of the assignment. I first read the entry wherein you had some girl that you let yourself love or whatever, and I thought, hey, that sounds terribly familar, I am always finding guys I should not be dating. And then I read a bunch before that because that one didn't make much sense. If only I could see when I added you to my friend list. That would be helpful.

  • I keep waiting for the movie to come out, but I can't decide if it would be a tragedy or a romantic comedy.

    I'm kidding.

    • Actually, I have considered writing a book. I wasn't extremely interesting in High School*, but my college life was very interesting. I have told coworkers stories from college and they love them. I thought about writing a book about this situation, and since we met in college and she was usually around during the parties or times when interesting things happened, I could weave in most of those stories.

There are 2 problems with this. One, my mind doesn't work the way a writers mind works. I get off on tangents explaining every little detail, and it is hard for me to keep a good flow. However, I'm hoping that since I now recognize these things, I might be able to come up with something readable if I had some help. Two, I don't have a lot of spare time to write in, and usually I'm on the lake in my spare time. I think maybe if I had dictation software, I could do OK, because I'm an excellent orator, I can usually bring my thoughts together with a good flow when I'm speaking.
Hey it might happen. If it does, I'll be sure to let you guys know.

*Check out this journal [slashdot.org] to read about something interesting (at least to geeks) that happened to me in high school.

  • I'd love to help, but (in accordance with my privacy policy) I don't keep any records of which particular journal entries I've read. This protects you in the event of my records being requested by the Office Of Homeland Security.

I can state that I have read one or more of your journal entries in the past twelve (12) months. As CEO of myself, I will confidently state that I expect to continue doing so in the future, but as my legal department I must caution that this post contains forward looking statements and that past performance is not an indicator of future returns.

P.S. Any guess what sort of documents I've been slogging through this morning?

  • Can't tell the exact date. Scrolling through your old JE's, it looks like either right from the beginning, or sometime February or earlier.

Funny thing is that most of the people who are replying are also in MY friends/fans list as well. Are we carving out some weird subset of /. users? Are there other such enclaves?
  • Thoughts at the moment ummm none. [/:-)
  • that first caught my eye to your journal. And, I also happen to greatly sympathize with the psycho-ex-girlfriend experience, having been through that myself :)
  • I just stumbled upon this journal entry, I have not read any of the previous.
  • I think I added you to my friends list sometime around T(H)GSB. Prior to zoo.pl and messages.pl I didn't really follow any journals... Now I get so many messages about new journal entries, I don't have time to read them all! Probably ought to thin out the friends list one of these days...

Completely offtopic, does anyone know how it is that the SourceForge/StarWars banners that OSDN runs haven't resulted in a lawsuit yet? "May the Forge be with you" and that distinctive font ought to be enough, even without the other obvious simmilarities. Don't any of Lucas' people read slashdot?!
    • I too wondered about this. Here's my take, althought IANAL:
The only way you can sue for trademark infringement is if you prove that whatever you are suing over is causing you to confuse the thing you are suing over with the original product. So, if I made a soft drink called pespi and made it look like a pepsi can, they could sue my pants off. However, since SW is a group of Movies, Books, action figures, etc. and not a software product, I think this would be considered a parody. This is just my thoughts.

  • You have a great journal. Lots of topics --you never know what you will find next.

    Good stuff.
