Journal TechnoLust's Journal: New Contract gets interesting... 6

The owner of the company stopped by yesterday to see what kind of progress I was making. I'm going through the tasks about twice as fast as they estimated, so they are going to give me some more tasks to do. They have several small projects laying around that no one has time to do. I was given the ones that were most important, but now they are thinking of just letting me do all of them. It's a lot more math than I originally thought, but it's fun/challenging.

Have a couple of face-to-face interviews over the next few days, so things are looking up on the job front.

New Contract gets interesting...

  • Does the possibility exist that they will convert you from contract work to full-time? Burning through the task list like that might persuade them, although it certainly is not a guarantee.

  • Slow down!

At my first temp job, they had estimated 3 days work. It was done in about 6 hours. There were 3 of us doing it. So instead of 3 days, we were done after one.

You are certainly helping them by going so fast, but not helping yourself at all. Back off the pace a little. You can still move faster than expected, but if they decide to let you go when all the tasks are done anyway, you are just shorting yourself a few days of work.
    • The owner of the company came over yesterday and asked how it was coming. I told him I had 4 of the 8 parts of the project done. He said, "If you get done early, we have some other small projects we have on the backburner that you can work on if you get done early." I'm thinking if I get stuff done a lot faster, next time they have a little something, they'll call me.
  • Tis OK to get done early, but make sure you take the time to polish your code/algorithms. Tight, reliable code that comes in just a bit early (and is thus fully billable) is much better than average (but still good) code rushed early. Little things like JavaDoc, test scripts, and the comments to make the next guy's life easier will project that you are a gentleman and a scholar - or something like that. (grin)
