RIM Offering Free Voice Calling In Attempt to Remain Competitive 134

zacharye writes "In version 7, RIM has added a voice calling feature that will allow BBM users to speak to each other for free when connected to Wi-Fi networks. While similar third-party solutions like Viber exist and extend the free calling feature to cellular data connections, an integrated solution that will eventually be baked right into the BlackBerry OS offers clear advantages over third-party options. It also can be counted as an advantage for RIM’s platform over Android and iOS, at least until RIM’s rivals begin to roll out similar solutions."

And I do... but this kind of nonsense inevitably affects the entire market... Apple raises prices and people still buy their products... Then other vendors raise their prices too... I know it's how our free market works... prices set at what the market is willing to pay... but it chips away at our power as the consumer (I hate that word by the way).

Can a Regular Person Repair a Damaged Hard Drive? 504

MrSeb writes "There's a lot of FUD when it comes to self-repairing a broken hard drive. Does sticking it in the freezer help? The oven? Hitting it with a hammer? Does replacing the PCB actually work? Can you take the platters out and put them in another drive? And failing all that, if you have to send the dead drive off to a professional data recovery company, how much does it cost — and what's their chance of success, anyway? They're notoriously bad at obfuscating their prices, until you contact them directly. This article tries to answer these questions and strip away the FUD." What has been your experience with trying to fix broken drives?

"Oil Strider" Device Mimics Water Strider Insects 39

LilaG writes "Who hasn't marveled at the ability of water bugs to skate along the surface of lakes and ponds? Now materials scientists in China have taken a cue from water striders and created a device that can coast along the surface between oil and water. The tricky part was figuring out how to make an oil-repelling surface that worked underwater. It came down to coating copper wires with copper oxide microstructures that look like flowers made up of nanopetals. Scientists think such coatings could enable robots that clean up oil spills, bug-proof car windshields, and ship hulls that don't build up barnacles."

I'm not one for censorship...but there is a societal difference between what is acceptable in public and private spaces... And while some believe we can't step on anyones rights... You have to have a line somewhere... Should there be a law?...no...we have too many of those already... Should the moron watching porn in public realize some people find that offensive? ... Yes and I wish that would happen more, but not likely... Contrary to popular belief you don't have the "right" to do whatever the fuck you want...you have to live with a bunch of other people on this rock and you have to realize not everybody believes or thinks the same as you...

NASA Taps 7 Commercial Firms For Suborbital Flights 27

coondoggie writes "NASA this week picked seven commercial space companies to fly a manner of experiments on their suborbital aircraft. According to NASA the companies will split $10 million and get a two-year contract that will let NASA set up a pool of reusable suborbital systems that could help it test applications in everything from astrobiology to measuring the impact of a solar storm."

Record-Seeking Bloodhound SSC Goes Partially Open Source 64

jd writes "I've been monitoring the progress of Bloodhound SSC (the car aiming for the 1,000 MPH record) and it looks like they're opting for some interesting tactics. In April, the car itself went partially open source, with a complete set of schematics and specifications and an invite for engineering bugfixes. According to them, it's the first time a racing team has done this. Sounds likely enough. The latest patches to be released were a tripling in fin size and a switch to steel brakes because carbon fibre would explode."
