Submission + - Microsoft is TOO F---ing aggressive

J. L. Tympanum writes: I keep getting popups on my peecee saying "Microsoft phone link has stopped working."

1. What is this thing, and why do I care if it has stopped working?
2. After some surfing I find out it is some code (no doubt badly written and full of bugs and security holes) that connects the peecee to my phone.
3. I neither asked for this feature nor do I want it.
4. A little more surfing and I find out how to disable "phone link".
5. I still keep getting this damn popup. Obviously, whatever is detecting that "phone link" is not working doesn't bother to determine if the user (i.e., me) WANTS it to be not working.
6. After I lot more surfing I still don't know how to suppress this damn popup.
7. MS needs to be suppressed.

Submission + - Windows 11 = Windows 7 ? 1

J. L. Tympanum writes: It looks to me like Windows 7, 10 and 11 are all the same OS, just with a different-looking window manager slapped on top. Can someone with more knowledge of Windows internals verify this claim, or refute it?

Submission + - A forecast from the past

J. L. Tympanum writes: This is a radio play from 1950(!) that neatly anticipates some of the social problems the Web has created. It is played as a comedy, but the issues, as we now know, are serious.

Submission + - Sounds we don't hear any more

J. L. Tympanum writes: Discussing music with my 24-year old son, the Typewriter Song https://archive.org/details/Ty... (Leroy Anderson) came up. Within 10 seconds he had it playing on his laptop, but he didn't really get the joke because he had never seen a typewriter nor heard the characteristics sounds — the clack of the keys, the end-of-line bell, the zip of the carriage return — that the typewriter makes. What other sounds do we not hear any more? More points for the longer they lasted (typewriters were around for over a century).
Networking

Submission + - Becoming a Network Administrator

J. L. Tympanum writes: After many years as a star programmer, I have taken a position which involves maintaining and rebuilding the in-house network of a small company. There are maybe 100 machines, a mix of blade servers running linux, and desktop peecees running windows of all flavors. Basically, I have to learn networking from scratch. I have been given an "unlimited": budget to buy routers, switches etc to set up my own little test network as part of the learning process. So the question is, what's the right strategy here? What routers or switches or other equipment should I acquire? What books should I read? Should I take classes from Cisco, Global Knowledge, my local community college, or somewhere else?

Submission + - Opting out increases spam?

J. L. Tympanum writes: I used to ignore spam but recently I have been using the opt-out feature. Now I get more spam than ever, especially of the Nigerian scam (and related) types. The latter has gone from almost none to several a day. Was I a fool for opting out? Is my email address being harvested when I opt out? Has anybody had similar experience?
