Submission + - 3D-Printed House Constructed On-Site In One Day

Heffenfeffer writes: Russian company Apis Cor has manufactured a 3D printed concrete house on-site in 24 hours in Stupino Town, Russia. Using a tower crane-shaped concrete extruder that can rotate 360 degrees, the 38 square meter (408.88 square foot) rotor shaped home walls were constructed in one day. Voids left in the manufacturing process were filled by hand, installing windows, doors, and adding polyurathane and fiber insulation to the hollow concrete walls. The roof was also constructed by hand using polymer membranes, welded together using hot air and special equipment. Total construction costs were $10,134 (USD), approximately $266.66/sqm ($24.78/sqft). They also constructed a temporary protective heated tent to surround the house, as they constructed the house during winter — though the printer can be used at temperatures down to -35C, concrete has to be at least +5C to cure.

"You did it! The Lexus brought you luck! Unfortunately, the Lexus cannot accompany you any further, and must be euthanized. State and local regulations prevent you from leaving your Lexus alone and companionless. If your Lexus could talk - and the Enrichment Center reminds you that it cannot - it would tell you that it would rather die in a fire than inconvience you."

*after a crash*
"Spectacular. You appear to understand how the Lexus conserves momentum - or to be more precise, how it does not. All Lexus technologies remain safely operational up to 4000 degrees Kelvin. Rest assured that there is absolutely no chance of a dangerous equipment malfunction prior to your victory candescence. Goodbye."

*when coming out of repair shop*
"Remember when the Lexus caught on fire and I said, "Goodbye." and you were like, "No Way!" and then I was all "We pretended that we were going to murder you? That was great."

Fuel Efficiency and Slow Driving? 1114

vile8 writes "With the high gas prices and ongoing gas gouging in my hometown many people are trying to find a reasonable way to save gas. One of the things I've noticed is people driving exceptionally slow, 30mph in 45mph zones, etc. So I had to take a quick look and find out if driving slow is helpful in getting better mileage. I know horsepower increases substantially with wind resistance, but with charts like this one from truckandbarter.com it appears mileage is actually about the same between 27mph and 58mph or so. So I'm curious what all the drivers out there with the cool efficiency computers are getting ... of specific interest would be the hemis with MDS; how do those do with the cylinder shutoff mode at different speeds?" Related: are there any practical hypermiling techniques that you've found for people not ready to purchase a new car, nor give up driving generally?

When asked if the 60GB PS3 would be no more after the fire sale, he confirmed, "In America, yes." After that, "...what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD $599 version with one game."
