Apart from the military side, he seems to be an exact match for my views. He'd certainly be great as President - or more likely, he'd be an obstacle to "business as usual" and make veto overrides a daily event, but he'd still shift the balance firmly in the right direction.

In all honesty, I'd probably do the 'Bush' thing, but I'm not 100% behind either voter. The only way I'd be 100% behind one is if Bush dropped Cheney for McCain.
In 4 years, though, I'm voting McCain, and he'll win by a landslide.

IOW there is no guarantee that McCain would survive the primaries to make it to the Big Show. Some other candidate more appealing to the hard right might well defeat him -- again.

If I were voting though it would be Kerry. Honestly, other than a handful of issues, I don't see a whole lot of difference between the two parties, especially on foreign policy. Other than a couple of social issues, primarily abortion, and I guess a few environmental issues, what's the difference between the two.

I'd prefer voting on issues directly, in a lot of cases (like the "Proposition" system) - but choosing between two positions in an election seems to be much more effective than, for example, the British system. Ross Perot supporters caused Clinton to be elected when more people voted AGAINST him than FOR him. It is arguable that Ralph Nader supporters did the same thing in 2000. People aren't willing to vote 3rd party right now, because they are too scared that the other ideology will win if they don't vote for one of the two parties.

I don't think I agree with that: when you vote for whichever option is closer to your beliefs, you are influencing things in that direction. This is a problem in English, with "compromise" having two meanings - one negative, the other not: reaching a compromise is not a bad thing!
