Journal Em Emalb's Journal: A rant from the heart. 27

So, just received word today that "major restructuring" was going to occur in the near near future. That means that people are gonna lose their jobs.

That means there is a damned good chance *I* am going to lose my job.

If this does occur, (and I find out some more information on monday) I may just quit this fucking industry all together.

I'm tired of working my ass off for nominal pay so a bunch of fat cat anal-probed fucking alien share holders can "increase their profit margin" by two fucking percent.

I'm tired of giving every thing I have to a company that not only doesn't care whether or not it's people who earn the fucking money for them are employed, they don't care if you bust your ass for them or not.

I work with some people who won't do one fucking bit more than they absolutely have to, in order not to get fired.

I work with people who light it up the same as I do, going full fucking tilt for 9 or 10 hours a day, who get the same fucking reward as the slack assed crew.

I got layed off from Lucent in 2001. It took me 5 months to find another job. I finally took a position for $25,000 less than what I was making before. I still haven't gotten anywhere near my previous level.

I'm busting my ass, I know more and am smarter about what I do than I ever was at Lucent. I don't have the will power to start over again at even less than I make now.

I worked so fucking hard for this place and if I get the axe, I'm fucking done with this IT shit.

The fucking Indians and masochists can have it.

I've never once had a job where I truly enjoyed getting up in the morning and going to work.

It's a fucking myth spread by Socialist Commie bastards who live like Mafia Dons off our hard work and sweat. Fuck them and fuck each and every one of you who say suck it up. I've have. And it's gotten me no where. Fuck the American dream. In my next life I'm being born as a spoiled rotten mega rich little brat. And I'm shitting on everything I can. Because that's the American Dream.

Even if I am wrong, and everything turns out ok, fuck them for the people that *are* gonna get laid off.

God, why did I choose this field.

We are stupid geeks. Oh, our IQs might be up there, but we are stupid.

Gah.

I am so mad I don't know how I am going to get over this.

And the mother fuckers waited til friday at 4 to tell us. Then they let us stew over the weekend while they are out ass-raping each other at the country club. Back-slap this, mother fucker.

  • Ive seem more shit brained descisions in IT management than in any other enviroment. School decides they have enough money to buy Brand spanking new computers for the "Office Applications" (Read: Microsoft word), top of the line stuff with RAIDed scusi Hard drives. Teachers get a new dell model with P4's, dvd burners, and 23" monitors. What do the programing classes get? Nothing, they still slog along on p1 100's running 95 that havent had a proper rebuild in years and running so much security software (Tha
    • Ok, that just fucking sickens me. It's ignorant dipshits like those who dictate that we need a top of the line P4 with all the works JUST TO FUCKING RUN MS OFFICE 2003 AND SURF THE INTERNET!!!

I'll bet your school network still runs on Cat3 wiring, with 10Mbps networking with switches...ooops wait, i meant hubs! :(

But you're right, at least you're still a student tech there (as painful as that might be ;)

      Good luck man!

    • Screw management. Management is overpaid. They do less real work than the people they manage and they get paid more.

Yea, it involves a lot of bullshit, yea it involves responsibility, but screw em. It's basically a babysitting job where you report to the parents and if the kids fuck up you're screwed. Last I checked, $10 an hour was a pretty good wage for babysitting.

Yet still, it's shit like this that makes me wish I'd stuck it out in the business program. Yea, I felt like I was losing my soul, but
  • I'm trying to leave IT as well. I don't understand what the appeal is.

I think that IQ is overrated. Boasting about IQ is like being mentally retarded & boasting that you can multiply 3 digit numbers in your head in 1 second. Big deal! So what?? I think that true success can be found with the most average IQ.
  • Here's where you go next: MANAGEMENT. That, or law school to become a patent/ip lawyer.

    No, I'm not fucking kidding.

Foolz and masochists stick it out on the tech side (yes, I fall under both categories. I dunno, I wanna see how far I get. But regardless, I'm still boning up on my project management skills and hounding managers for team lead experience.) The future is the same as now- manadtory 25% overtime with no compensation, capricious schedule changes, requirement creep, unrealisitc deadlines, and
    • or law school to become a patent/ip lawyer

Nope I called dibs on that one for when I get back from the desert. Satan already signed the receipt for my soul. It's a done deal. He could become a productivity consultant, though....

The future is the same as now- manadtory 25% overtime with no compensation, capricious schedule changes, requirement creep, unrealisitc deadlines, and mindless budget cuts. Its better to be on the other side of the line.

The other option is to go the total mercinary rout
  • Good luck with it. I echo the others in saying 'get the fuck out' as quick as possible.

Hope the hangover isn't too bad;)
  • I'd give a lot to be where you are.

Don't take that the wrong way. I'm not saying you're wrong about any of that. I agree with everything you've got up there. But I'm stuck doing a job that I don't like at all, that doesn't pay decent, that I could do if I was an idiot. Which I'm not. The one saving grace is that there are some mionorly IT things that I've wormed my way into at this job. I can get away with doing them, instead of what my job description says I should, and I can maybe enjoy myself for

  • Make your own damned company, with blackjack, and hookers. In fact, forget the blackjack! Really, dude, you should hook up with that bad programmer [slashdot.org] and make your own damned business. Working for people sucks unless you're so far down the corporate ladder than shit rolls right past you. So, unless you're unpersonned, you should work for yourself.

Of course, this is easy for me to say, I don't work for a company that does restructuring, and I've been unpersonned, so for now I'm safe.
  • I teach Kung Fu. I used to love working with computers. Until I had to. Then, it just kind of died. Look around in your life and see what you love to do. Then see how you can make money doing it. If money is not #1 in your life, there are lots of things you can do to survive. Work with kids. Work with wood. Make music. Write polling software for net companies ;).

I don't see why you need a career. Have a job, work it until it's no fun, then switch. One day you'll find something you love and are
  • i get so angry at compnaies for being pissed about low employee involvement and commitment. there never will be until they stop freakin laying people off.

man, i'm sooo sorry. unfortunatly that doesn't do a thing to help you out :^(

just out of curiosity, if you could do anything you wanted, what would it be? what do you REALLY enjoy doing?

  • that's why I'm leaving IT myself and trying to get into firefighting. It may still have some paperwork bullshit, but at least I don't have to enhance shareholder value.
  • In my next life I'm being born as a spoiled rotten mega rich little brat.

...that this is fun... I *am* a spoiled rotten (though not mega-rich) brat :-) It's a pretty easy life. Apart from that, IT alwayss stinks. You never get the credit you deserve... Well, I don't have to complain my current client actually insists that I stay up to the end of the project. That means when destaffing due to the end of the project will start, I will be the last to go. That's pretty cool :-)

    However, I really woul

  • As one of the recent converts to the slacker camp, I have to say what makes YOU so special?
I mean seriously. I'm into my 4th year of my contract at you know where and i finally learned the last 4 months of my 3rd year that it isn't fuckin worth making these bastards happy. So get off your high horse and suck it up and join the good time crew that takes a 20 min cig break every hour in addition to the 15 min coffee break.
Oh yeah come in late or not at all. Bring a screw gun to work and take apart your cube.
  • I hope you don't lose your job... but it sounds like you aren't happy there, so if you don't, maybe you should start looking for something else anyway. Maybe you already have been. I used to hate my job. I had to do all the crap work that no one else wanted to do. The pay stunk. I started looking for another job, and going on interviews. They found out. I received a large raise. I'm happy with my pay now. I don't get stressed much about work anymore. I work hard when it is required, without compla
  • First dude, this fucking sucks. Mother fuckers don't know shit... its the same everywhere. Here's a perfect example. We are finishing a pretty large project... and the director of applications development wants to "celebrate"

The fucking ass-faced bitch, she didn't do a fucking thing but go to meetings and "stress" over the budget.

I often think about leaving IT and going back into design. In fact, I am working on my portfolio here and there, so that if I ever decide to pull the trigger... I'll have some sh
  • Oh wait, this isn't a poll, nevermind :P

    Seriously if I may....

From what I see, the problem with the IT field in general is that it was (and mostly still is) completely entrenched with all these people who only memorized answers from old A+,MCP,MCSE,CCNA, ad nauseum without actually understanding why they picked A instead of B or some shit...and then getting a job as a Systems Admin or something overqualified for them. Hell, there are "IT Professionals" that can't even fucking map a window share to a drive
  • The...erm..."film" industry.
  • I've had jobs where I actually wanted to get up and go to them. IT jobs, at that. But not in this economy. I'm looking at at huge salary cut for taking the job that I'm probably going to take. But if I can get in, and the team is as much fun as they were in the interviews, that makes up for some of the crap that's pulled by other business units.

The thing is, most laypersons shouldn't be giving computer requirements. Something I learned from my last job, where the 'R&D IT' director decided that whatever
  • i'm going to need you to go ahead and come in on sunday, too. we uh... lost some people this week, and we're sort of playing catch up. ok? great!

that is to say of course, that lumburg is correct. when they cut back, even if you're still there you'll just hate it even more. you'll have even more work to do with even less thanks. i know because now that we only have half the people on my team, i have twice the responsibilities. no extra pay. the company did well this year, so we get our bonuses. but
