Journal Em Emalb's Journal: She finally died 39

Should have gave her an injection instead of dragging this out for weeks.

Now what will our stupid media latch on to?

Hope she finally found peace.

  • Now what do we flame each other over?

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

    • Cake. Dinner or breakfast?
      • It's not quite breakfast and it's not quite lunch, and you don't get everything you want, but it comes with a slice of melon.
        • "Brunch" is a combination of "breakfast" and "lunch". By combining the two, the dark forces of Communism are trying to eliminate one meal a day (three meals a day, rumor has it, are consider decadent by such un-American persons). This hurts poor corporations by depriving them of their rightful grocery-shopping income and must be stopped in the name of consumerism, freedom and the American Way.

The slice of melon probably came from Cuba anyway.

          Cheers,

          Ethelred M. Unraed

      • Neither.

        Cake is for sucks.

(not really, but I'm trying to start a flame war here)

Oh, and people who wipe standing up should be shot.

(again, not really, but flame war two sounds good)
    • The autopsy results and what we think of the coroner who performs it.
      • I already know the autopsy results- she died of starvation. Her brain damage was 80%, but the remaining 20% would have allowed her to keep on living. Beyond that- we don't know anything. Would she have survived on a liquid only diet? Can't tell that from an autopsy, we don't know enough about where things are in the brain to be sure. Would the 20% have eventually taken over for the destroyed 80% like in that 1880s case of the miner who blew a crowbar through his brain? We'll never know, an autopsy can

        • she died of starvation

I know it's a detail, but it was probably dehydration.
          • Hmm- get picky enough, dehydration is a form of starvation (as in, starvation is really malnutrition and the most important nutrtional element in any diet is indeed dihydrooxide or water...supposedly to the tune of 64 ounces a day for a healthy adult. Most Americans are lucky to get down a quarter of that.).
  • I liked the fact that the US media (and, by extension, most of the US public) seemed more obsessed about when an all but brain-dead woman was going to die than yet another mass-murder of kids whilst they were at school. Nice set of priorities there.

Shit man, how about worrying more about making schools (and US society in general) safer from gun crime than about how people who are for all intents and purposes already dead - I'd like to see even the most fanatic right-to-lifer argue that Terri Schiavo was le
    • Some of us were equally disgusted by all the attention this poor woman received nationally.

I'm not sure which is worse, that the school shooting got only cursory coverage, or the huge blowup this whole thing caused.

It's the main reason I normally don't listen to/watch/read the news.
      • My mother's a teacher here in New Jersey. She said that the news media had made a collective decision after all of the coverage that Columbine got reduce the coverage of school shootings in the future (whether not to "glorify" it, out of respect to the victims, or what other reason I don't know).

So, if this is true, I would guess this is the main reason for the reduced coverage of the school shooting-and the spectacles of Schiavo & the Jackson and Blake Trials only helped to kepp it further out of the

    • Yeah, my roommate was extremely angry about that. (She's Ojibwe, and from that area. The teacher that was killed was the mother of a family friend, but personal connections aside, it's still bigger news than Veggie Lady.)
    • Wow, that's a nice ignorant screed.

I'll agree that our priorities are a bit messed up but what do more calls for gun control have to do with the messed up kid at the school?

Control guns tightly? He got the weapons from his grandfather who was a police officer. (Now maybe grandpa could have locked things up better to keep them from being used on him but where do you draw the line?)

It shouldn't be easy for someone to be waving an Uzi in your face.
Where the heck does that come from? Getting ANY fully-a
      • Ignorant? OK, you're allowed your opinion.

Here's mine. It's shameful that a bunch kids getting murdered before they even get to sample what life has to offer are less newsworthy than a woman who's dead in all but name.

Of course, the reason why it's less newsworthy is that school massacres aren't big news anymore. They're like buses: miss one and they'll be another one along shortly. I don't know about you but one such incident is a tradegy. One every year or every other year is a disgrace. That you don't
        • How many "school masacres" have there been in the past 10 years? Please site specifics. They are no where near as prevalent as you claim.
They're like buses: miss one and they'll be another one along shortly.

Successfully converting a weapon to fully automatic is a lot more challenging than you'd like to think. Cycle rates need to be adjusted to avoid jams. Gas pressure for rechambering the weapon after firing is also important too. I know of one guy who tried such a conversion and it kept jamming aft
        • Here's an easy way to end school shootings COMPLETELY- pull depressed & bullied students out of school and give them a place where they can succeed. Make sure that orphans have a safe place to work out their feelings (this kid had a dead father and a mother in a mental institution). Make sure that people don't go without jobs so that this kind of nativist hatred doesn't get started.

Gun control will do nothing- eliminate the cause, not the symptom.
    • The only thing I know about Shiavo is what I have read here. I haven't seen/heard/read any mainstream coverage of this. I've actively avoided it. I have rarely mentioned it and I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've typed the name.
    • as has been already said, fully automatic guns like uzis are already tightly controlled. but you would be just as dead whether someone has a shotgun in your face or a knife in your face. criminalizing gun posession doesn't solve your problem, the criminals were already violating the law. they will either change weapons or ignore the law. either way, you're still dead. it only takes one well-placed slash with a knife or one well-aimed bullet.
      • Please, are you really suggesting that a knife is as effective a killing weapon as any gun?
        • When most of these ignorant shootings occur within arms reach of the victim, a baseball bat would be as effective a killing weapon as a gun. Except for the case of the sniper bastards that were running around here through Maryland, DC, and Virginia a while back, I do not know of any shootings that weren't close quarters.
          • If I was going to do it, I'd get an SUV with one of those black plastic roof rack hardshell coffins on top, and my 6.5mm Sweedish Mauser. I'd add a laser sight to it, and look for hills that overlook cities with plenty of back roads. I'd also only shoot one person per state, to keep the jurisdiction arguments at maximum potential.
        • It can be if you're Chechnyan. They're the people who invented the saying "A silent running man can slit 1000 throats in a single night". Oh, and the Ghurkas do such a good job assaulting machine gun positions with knives that the British Army gave them their own unit. The bloodiest battle in the Falkland Islands War was when a British Commander sent the Ghurkas in to take back an airfield with three machine gun nests. Took them all of 15 minutes- and they came back with various body parts as trophies.
  • Why didn't they just give her a lethal injection, boom...done. Game over, no suffering. Hell we treat our pets with more compassion then we treat each other. What a bizarre f'ed up world.

    Oh well, now what?

  • Q:
Now what will our stupid media latch on to?

    A:
Michael Jackson's nuts. Seem ripe for them to hang from for the next six weeks.

The disappointing thing is how both are equally weighed in our celeb-news magazine world.
    • Depends. Sick pope with a feeding tube dovetails nicely into Terri. They can even drag out the same 'experts' like that Father Guido Sarducci who has been 'speaking for the family' (ignoring that Michael is her fucking family also).

At least there are plenty of things to distract us from Tom DeLay's "Yet another ethics investigation" goings on.
