Pat Robertson. (see rdewald's journal)

Need I say more?

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network's The 700 Club.

Him would be Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Of course, this isn't the first time ol' Pat is asking for someone's death. Anyone remember his on air plea for people to pray for death(s) of a Supreme Court Justice(s)?

Two years ago, I felt an urgent need for people to unite and pray for change in the Supreme Court. So, in July of 2003, The 700 Club launched Operation Supreme Court Freedom, a nationwide 21-day prayer campaign. During that time, we asked our partners and viewers to pray for God to intervene and restore righteousness and justice in our land.

Tens of thousands of people responded to this massive prayer offensive and cried out to the Lord to change the court.

And God heard those prayers!

Yup.

Pat - setting a bright and shinning example of what being Christian is all about.

  • To be fair, nobody on the Supreme Court actually died.

Of course, this presents an interesting dilemma. Are they suggesting that god is a totalitarian figure who is actively working to undermine the long-standing processes of the United States? He's not a murderer... but he IS engaging in highly improprer, certainly illegal behavior.

Why do you hate the United States, Pat? Why?

Also, what, exactly, is his beef with Chavez? From what I can recall, he's weathered countless attempts to remove him from office but
      • but he IS engaging in highly improprer, certainly illegal behavior.

I will go along with improper. He has no excuse for saying what he said, in a VERY public forum. All that will do is get lots of feathers ruffled. What he said was true in the sense that we could have Chavez in a body bag in short order if we set our minds to do it, but to advocate is a bit of a dive off the deep end, even for him.

But was it really illegal for him to say that? I know if you make a threat against a sitting president or

      • No, I meant god. Is Robertson implying that god is exerting undue, illegal influence on the structure of the United States court system?

As far as Robertson goes, he's just an ass. People like him, or more importantly, people who actually listen to him, are exactly the sorts that give people like me thoroughly nasty opinions of religion.
      • to get slightly silly here .. the only legal way i could think of having someone convicted of murder for this..
They believe God is real , praying for it to murder someone is the equivalent of hiring a hit-man .
So if your state accepts the existence of God then it could be said that they have in essence Solicited the crime .
Of course I don't think any court in the world would take that case seriously , but it would be hilarious.
  • Honestly, just about everyone I know socially out here in the sticks is not "that" kind of Christian. And even if they like Pat Robertson, they have no CLUE as to what his political opinions like this are.

I give Christians a pass, in spite of Pat Robertson.

      • The real hatemongers here are the anti-American Left who hate their own country and look to its humbling and/or downfall.

Hmm, and what is wrong with being humble? Methinks you have forgotten that Pride is a Mortal Sin.

          • The humbling of the United States will result in aggression and war again on global scales. Terrorism and localized, finite wars, however horrible, are of no comparison to global war and the destruction, death, and misery wrought.

Yet that may well be the natural state of mankind- it takes either a draconian hand (as with Pax Americana, Pax Britania, or Pax Romana) or a complete lack of technology to NOT have massive warfare.
      • And he was elected, fairly.

        Why do you hate democracy?

The US government, which supported the failed coup against Chavez, has zero (0) credibility on this issue.

(By the way, I think Chavez is a pompous jerk, and if I were Venezuelan I would have voted for the recall and probably joined the general strike. But I'm not Venezuelan. Being a democrat means respecting other countries' choices.)

Kill him because he disagrees with US policy? Then we have a very long list of world leaders to kill and countries to conquer - including, but not limited to several KEY "friendly" nations supporting the US war on terrorism.

The Monroe Doctrine died a long time ago. Let it go. Not every conutry wants to be a Capitalist society and not every country wants the same Federal Democracy that the US has.

Some actually LIKE Communism and/or Socialism and who the hell are we to say they're wrong?

                • It's not Wacko Pat whom we should be most concerned with. It's the fact that billions of our tax dollars are continuing to go toward a war that has little, if no, remaining purpose. I find it simply amazing that we could spend so much time improving our own schools, poverty levels, etc. and yet tax dollars are instead being spent to ensure that Halliburton et al. continue to get their fat, juicy paws on gov't contracts. YES, there is a lot of poverty in other places in the world, but we're not even fighting
              • So what if he thinks socialism is the only path? Who cares? He's completely dependent on the capitalist system to sell his oil, which (last time I checked) he's happily continuing to do. He is certainly no military threat to the US.

I stand corrected on the possibility of fraud in the recall. However, you have to take the pro-recall exit polls with a few grains of salt. [usnews.com] The firm that did the exit poll and now claims fraud "was hired by businessmen who were almost surely opponents of Chavez," so it has

                  • For instance, if we had crushed China in the Tianamen Square aftermath, I imagine our fears on that score would be far less severe now.

Yeah, because we'd all be dead from nuclear war. I hope you're not serious (and am pleased you're not the SecDef).

                  • I believe strongly in the use of force proactively against those who proclaim themselves enemies of the United States, whether they pose a threat or not.

Holy shit, you're serious aren't you? Do you realize how little difference there is between your reasoning and that used to justify terrorist attacks?

                    • Reducing us all to the level of terrorism isn't so unheard of -- after all, "shock" and "awe" are both synonyms for "terror."

What separates those of us who "wish to hang onto mores" from those who admit to have reduced themselves to the level of terrorists in their thirst for vengance, is that we know that diplomacy works, from examples and experiences all throughout history.

THE POINT: Pat lives by a double standard. He uses Christianity to attack anyone who isn't conservative, christian, put-another-dollar-in-the-mail-for-me pro Pat and his beliefs. He thens shuns Christianity and calls for the murder of another who disagrees with his political, social, and religious beliefs...

I don't know anyone in my Christian circle that is in favor of him opening is pie hole any more. And I am on the conservative (theologically) end of Christianity. This is the kind of hardships that some Muslims live through when the hate mongers stand on top of Jewish settlements waving their AK-47s in the air in the name of Islam.

Many of these "Christians" just do not know or choose to ignore almost all of Jesus's Sermon on the Mount [biblegateway.com] when he said "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven."

To quote a DC Talk song, "The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny them with their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."
