  • Whoopi Goldberg in there?

I really don't get it. I'm very surprised by all the people trying to rationalize/defend what this guy did.

    • As peacefinder mentions below (as does the LJ entry I linked to), the petition is nominally more about violation of supposedly neutral ground, and that's fair enough, but unless there's some actual legal impropriety (which there doesn't seem to be), the dude pled guilty then took off. And that's kinda my point. Even taking his actual offence out of the equation, heinous as it is, none of these defenders of Polanski can come up with any kind of logical or ethical reasoning for him not having his day in cou
      • Literally the best arguments out there hinge on the fact that the victim managed to live a healthy productive life afterward and that it happened a long time ago. That's the best they can come up with? Pathetic.

And as one Catholic writer put it: If Roman wore a Roman Collar- would these people still be making the same argument?

After all, more than 99% of the cases involving Roman Catholic priests happened between 1959 and 1986- and more than 75% of the accused were DEAD.

So if you believe that pat

    • The guy is scum in my book for going after this [nytimes.com]:

When asked by Acting Justice Elliott Wilk whether he thought of the effect it would have on the other children, Mr. Allen said, "I felt nobody in the world would have any idea."

Justice Wilk asked, "Wasn't that enough, that you would know that you were sleeping with your children's sister?"

Mr. Allen answered: "I didn't see it that way. I'm sorry."

In other words, "It's okay as long as nobody finds out."

I'm not saying that the prosecutors are going about

      • He actually fled after pleading guilty, but before being sentenced. So, I just don't see how anyone can support that kind of behavior. I get that the complaint is one of violating "neutrality," but if this was John Doe, it wouldn't so much as register a blip of outrage. The reality he is not running from injustice he is running from justice. That is just never going to get much in the way of sympathy from me.
  • Polanski drugged and forcibly raped a girl, pled guilty to knowingly having sex with a girl under fourteen, then skipped bail. So no sympathy from me.

However, on reading the actual petition... hmmm. Imagine if Salman Rushdie - one of the signatories - had been arrested while in Britain receiving the Booker prize on an Iranian warrant. That would have been Bad, no?

Maybe the signatories have a point besides supporting a known child rapist.

    • had been arrested while in Britain receiving the Booker prize on an Iranian warrant.

Really bad analogy, because in a world where where Iran has normalized its relations to the world where they have extradition treaties with other countries, Death Penalties for blasphemy don't exist anymore. Also, read my reply to stoolie above. This is a fairly open and shut case.
      • Well, Aung San Suu Kyi then. Or Nelson Mandela. Or anyone else convicted of a political crime being arrested for extradition while on "neutral" ground.

(Keep in mind that I am not, repeat NOT defending Polanski here. I'm just talking about the petitioners' possible motives for signing this. If any of them knew the facts / had read the grand jury testimony and still signed, then they can DIAF soonest IMHO.)

        • while on "neutral" ground.

The problem here is, the neutral ground is some pokey film festival, not a legally-recognized district. In fact, the reverse is true, as the Swiss and the US have an agreement to extradite.

Or anyone else convicted of a political crime

And if this had any political ramifications, I probably wouldn't have bothered even posting this JE. Apples and Oranges.
          • Yep, I get all that. I don't even disagree. But where you and I see an Apples-Oranges comparison, i could see someone like Pedro Almovidar* thinking "It's all fruit, no?"

[*: Spanish, IIRC, where the age of consent is ...13 [wikipedia.org]?! Wow. If a Spaniard did not know about the forcible part of Polanski's crime, this might look like some kind of political prosecution by an uptight State.]

  • This is third hand 'information', but I heard that after he plead guilty, the judge either rejected or was going to reject the punishment portion of the plea.

Now, given that the guy had a few nickels to rub together, he should have stuck around, said "fuck you" to the judge, and gone to court.

I also heard an explanation for why the renewed interest by the prosecutor in this case, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was, what with all of the bleating about the case.
