A million years ago when I got my first management job I had to attend a training session on 'Goals and Objectives', the current in vogue management tool. The instructor impressed on us that 'you get what you measure'. He used an example of police wanting to improve road safety by measuring the number of moving violation tickets given out. Ticket quantities went through the roof but there was no improvement in accident rates; go figure. What was true in the 70s is still true today.

Which is why you have to ensure what you measure actually produces desired outcomes and not create perverse incentives. Reminds me of teh Dilbert cartoon where the PHB announces a bug bounty and Wally says “I’m writing myself a new minivan”

Very true, but betting on games makes people more likely to watch tehm, driving viewership and TV revenue. Major sports may decry the impact of gambling and run all the Addicted? Call ... ads hey want, but the reality is gambling helps driver viewership which brings in money so you can do the math...

I wondered how long. it would take before they did this. Businesses are good to start with because tehy are used to shipping via a carrier, Amazon is just one more carrier to see how much they can save with them vs UPS/FedEX/USPS. Home is harder because the last miles is variable; so you can't set fixed pickup routes and handling pickups takes longer tahn delivering and also need sorting so adding it to the drop-offs would be a challenge. However, a partnership with USPS to handle last mile and Amazon ships makes sense, FedEx and UPS already handle mail so it's not some new idea; Amazon could bid for the contract, and winning deprives competitors of lower margin freight that can be used to cube or weight out a plane. Amazon, meanwhile, gets volume for deadheading planes and trucks.

I suspect, given the potential size of the user base as well as the potential high value users on the app, "if" should be when.

In addition, given the developer's name 45-47-press, it would not surprise me if it was some Trump owned entity getting government money to develop it. Nothing like channeling some cash to your own pocket.

Firefox has an extension called Youtube Custom Speed. You can set arbitrary speeds from .05 to 16x in whatever increments you feel like adding. Not that it helps for the dipshits explaining how to type something in a terminal prompt, but it's definitely handy for speeding through laptop disassemblies and the like.

Chrome does appear to have the same thing so it probably works on whatever browser you like.

In Pocket Casts, the app I use, there's a playback speed control that can go up to 5x. I usually listen to podcasts at about 3x speed, which feels right to me. I lose a little nuance for audio fiction, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

16x audio playback speeds are typical for screen readers for visually impaired users. Maybe your wife configured something like that, but they take practice to get used to. I only have some familiarity with those because I used to have a blind co-worker and had to support his setup.
