How many Slashdot readers were there? Have you had a recent COVID test?

Submission + - LA 'jetpack man' was inflatable Holloween decoration (bbc.com)

Aighearach writes:

Investigators looking into a series of sightings of a mysterious "jetpack man" flying over Los Angeles say they may in fact have been balloons. The FBI launched an investigation after several pilots reported spotting "a guy in a jetpack" at 3,000ft (915m) above the city's LAX airport last year. But now officials say the pilots may have seen inflatables. Police helicopter footage apparently shows a Halloween decoration that broke loose and drifted into the sky.

Submission + - SEC sues John McAfee over promoting cryptocurrency (reuters.com)

Aighearach writes:

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday sued John McAfee, creator of the eponymous anti-virus software, alleging that he made over $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation from recommending seven cryptocurrency offerings on Twitter that were materially false and misleading. The regulator, which is seeking a trial by jury, alleged that from at least November 2017 through February 2018, McAfee recommended cryptocurrencies that he was paid to promote, while falsely denying “he was being paid by the issuers.”

Submission + - Musk wins defamation trial over 'pedo guy' tweet (reuters.com) 3

Aighearach writes: Free speech survives an attack by some British guy, as Elon Musk wins the lawsuit accusing him of tossing off insults on twitter.

Musk, who testified during the first two days of the trial in his own defense and returned to court on Friday to hear closing arguments from the two sides, exited the courtroom after the verdict and said: "My faith in humanity is restored."

Submission + - John McAfee Hides in Cuba, Offers Cryptocurrency for Asylum, Runs for President (reuters.com)

Aighearach writes: John McAfee is back in the news after having fled the Bahamas. Now he's on his yacht in Havana trying to trade snake oil for protection. He insists that "it would be trivial to get around the U.S. government’s embargo through the use of a clever system of currency." Clever and trivial at the same time, who better than John McAfee to solve that one?

"You can’t just create a coin and expect it to fly. You have to base it on the proper blockchain, have it structured such that it meets the specific needs of a country or economic situation. There are probably less than 10 people in the world who know how to do that and I’m certainly one of them."

He's also running for President. Of the US, not Cuba.
