Journal Journal: Open source video editing still has a long way to go 1

Here is Roblimo's take on Linux video editing state of affairs:

Kino captures video (although not high-definition video) competently through a FireWire port, and Cinelerra can do most video editing tasks if you are willing to spend three to ten times as long doing them as you would with Vegas or Final Cut.

DMCA Creator Admits Failure, Blames RIAA 239

An anonymous reader writes "DMCA architect Bruce Lehman has admitted that "our Clinton administration policies didn't work out very well" and "our attempts at copyright control have not been successful". Speaking at conference in Montreal (video at 11:00), Lehman lay much of the blame at the feet of the recording industry for their failure to adapt to the online marketplace in the mid-1990s."

Spammer That Sued Spamhaus Now Sued for Spamming 110

Dave Q. Lintard writes with a link to The Register's coverage of a suit against the spammer that sued Spamhaus. e360 Insight, as the company is known, is accused of using a botnet and compromised headers to get their 'advertising' into the mailboxes of the claimant. These are also the folks that tried to get the Illinois courts to suspend SpamHaus's domain registration when they wouldn't play by e 360's rules. 'e360 Insight sued Spamhaus after the anti-spam organisation blacklisted its domains over alleged spamming. In a default ruling made by an Illinois court in September 2006, Spamhaus was ordered to pay $11.7m in compensation to e360 Insight, pull the organisation's listing, and post a notice stating that it was wrong to say e360 Insight was involved in sending junk mail. UK-based Spamhaus did not defend the case and the ruling was made in its absence.'

Ze End of The Show 47

theodp writes "Before YouTube caught on, there was Ze Frank. Slate mourns the loss of The Show, which came to an end last week after a 365-day run. Sorry, Sports Racers. 'The result was a new kind of improvised conversation/performance art. Ze beamed himself out to a worldwide audience and gathered them into a universe of his own devising. A wiki sprung up, with fans completing a transcript of every episode. Ze also gave out missions, such as creating the ugliest MySpace page and building an "Earth sandwich," which consisted of placing pieces of bread on exact opposite points of the globe. It was this "live" element that made the project not-televison, not-boring, and ultimately fleeting.'"

Submission + - Parallax HYDRA Game Console

Cisco Kid writes: "Parallax Inc. has released an educational game console based on their new multicore processor the "Propeller" chip. What's cool is that that HYDRA kit comes with a keyboard, mouse, game controller, memory cards, book (written by Andre' Lamothe) and all the cables and accessories to get started with the system. The HYDRA is similar to the XGameStation (another one of Lamothe's creations), but much easier to use. What's cool is that they have dropped the price to $199 for the whole system from $249 which is a pretty good deal for such a complete development kit. I don't really play games that much and I definitely don't write them (I do networking), but I got into computers like most people because of game programming and the HYDRA is cool since its really the only low cost alternative to the PS3 that has a 8-core multiprocessing chip in it. The HYDRA is a great way to learn multiprocessor/multicore programming techniques and it won't break your bank. I just bought one and between the kit, the book, and all the demos. I am going to be quite busy, highly recommended. You can check the HYDRA out at these locations: www.hydraconsole.com www.xgamestation.com www.parallax.com"

Flying the Airbus A380 281

FloatsomNJetsom writes "So the largest passenger airplane in the world actually is pretty large inside — Popular Mechanics has a great article and video from their test flight on the brand new double-decker Airbus A380. This includes footage of takeoff, interviews with the pilot and test engineer, a rundown on the bar, the two staircases, and an attempt to walk down a crowded aisle from one end of the plane to the other without having to say 'excuse me.'"
