Submission + - GCW-Zero The Open Source Gaming Handheld

YokimaSun writes: Fans of Emulation and Homebrew have not had much to cheer about over the years, the recent generation of consoles have all pretty much killed off any hacking by constant firmware updates. The days of PSP Homebrew have died a death and consoles like the Caanoo, GP2x and even the mighty Openpandora never really lived up to the massive expectation. There is a glimmer of hope from a team of homebrew developers who have developed a new console called the GCW-Zero, a new Open Source Handheld system which uses the OpenDingux Linux OS, the specs are impressive with a Ingenic JZ4770 1 GHz MIPS processor, Vivante GC860, capable of OpenGL ES 2.0, 3.5 inch LCD with 320x240 pixels; 4:3 aspect ratio, 512 MB DDR2 and 16GB of internal memory which can via external memory card be extended by another 32GB. N64 and PS1 emulation and everything below should be at full speed in time.

Submission + - US Will Be World's Top Oil Producer by 2017

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "The NY Times reports that according to a report by the International Energy Agency, the US will overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s leading oil producer by about 2017, will become a net oil exporter by 2030, and will become “all but self-sufficient” in meeting its energy needs in about two decades — a “dramatic reversal of the trend” in most developed countries. “The foundations of the global energy systems are shifting,” says Fatih Birol, chief economist at the Paris-based organization, which produces the annual World Energy Outlook. There are several components of the sudden shift in the world’s energy supply, but the prime mover is a resurgence of oil and gas production in the United States, particularly the unlocking of new reserves of oil and gas found in shale rock. The widespread adoption of techniques like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling has made those reserves much more accessible, and in the case of natural gas, resulted in a vast glut that has sent prices plunging. The agency’s report was generally “good news” for the United States says Michael A. Levi, senior fellow for energy and environment at the Council on Foreign Relations, because it highlights the nation’s new sources of energy but Levi cautions that being self-sufficient does not mean that the country will be insulated from seesawing energy prices, since those oil prices are set by global markets. The message is more sobering for the planet, in terms of climate change. Although natural gas is frequently promoted for being relatively low in carbon emissions compared to oil or coal, the new global energy market could make it harder to prevent dangerous levels of warming (PDF). “The report confirms that, given the current policies, we will blow past every safe target for emissions,” says Levi. “This should put to rest the idea that the boom in natural gas will save us from that.”"

Submission + - PSVita Hacked - Native Homebrew Loader Coming Soon

Busshy writes: Since the release of the PSVita the console has clearly stuttered with sales that are pretty dreadful especially in its homeland in japan, where the PSP was selling more until this week with the release of Hatsune Miku Project Diva F which has seen PSVita sales quadruple. For the rest of the planet sales are still slow thanks to a dull line up of games. This could change now as Yifan Lu the coder of the Kindle Hack and PSX Xperia has revealed that he is now working on a Native Loader for the PSVita, basically its an Userland Vita Loader for loading unsigned executables on your Vita in other words a Homebrew Loader for the PSVita. To calm Sony fears he claims it is physically impossible to run "backups" with the exploit. The exploit cannot decrypt or load retail games. At this time the exploit is unreleased, naturally he doesnt want Sony to plug it.

Submission + - The Rarest Nes Game Final Fantasy 2 On Sale for 50K

Croakyvoice writes: In what seems to be the in thing at the moment comes another auction to add to last months Zelda Nes auction and that crazy Million Dollar Collection. This time for RPG fans this could be classed as the Holy Grail of Nes games. The game in question is Final Fantasy 2 which was never released outside of Japan but luckily for the person who at this time is selling this on Ebay for 50K, there was one made for the 1991 Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by SquareSoft, sadly the USA version never had a release because they decided to work on the SuperNes instead.

Submission + - 3DS XL is Out Now (dcemu.co.uk) 1

Busshy writes: "A few months after the rather subdued release of the PSVita comes the release of the Larger screened 3DS XL, improvements are the obvious larger screens and much improved battery life, CVG report that the 3D effect has noticeably improved. As you'd expect with a larger display, the sweet spot in which you have to angle the device to consume your trio of dimensions is far easier to find on the XL. The console is shipping in 3 variations with sites such as Amazon offering different deals depending on where you live in europe. Those wanting the Transparent version of the 3DS XL are out of luck at this time. Slashdotters in the USA will have to wait till Mid August for the new console."
