If I were going to do a huge crime like that, I'd not wear my own clothes. I'd go to multiple thrift stores and buy used clothes with cash to make it harder to track me down via sourcing. I'd also get shoes that were slightly too big/small, cut/dye my hair, apply fake tattoos, wear fake earring or nose stud, etc. Then after the crime I'd destroy those clothes and hope authorities are looking for someone who doesn't even match me.
So... If you found the tie "I" was wearing during the scene of the crime and analyzed it, you'd likely figure out info related to its previous owner.
If you ever watch any cold case files or similar shows, many people get caught due to the fact they keep the murder weapon or clothes they wore while committing the crime. They leave fuzz from their jacket, footprints from shoes with odd wear, hats with hair in them, etc. If you're going to leave the police clues, be sure they a misleading clues and don't track back to you. And I think most can agree, D.B. Cooper did a pretty good job of NOT leaving useful clues for law enforcement to find.
