The reason we lost the Start menu in the first place is because Microsoft added the Start menu search field, people started using it, and then they cited that according to their research, nobody used the actual menu anymore.

Ergo, if we quietly ignore Metro and don't complain about it, they will probably come to the conclusion that we are now "using" Metro and use that to justify killing off another part of the formerly perfectly-functional desktop.

Linux Mint *is* basically Ubuntu with a different UI...and codecs...or rather, it's Ubuntu with the *original* UI.

Also, using Ubuntu with a different DE means you're still using Ubuntu. The GP specifically stated he didn't want to support what Canonical is doing. While what you're saying may be easier (I myself recently installed both and was surprised to find that it was actually easier in Ubuntu than Mint this time around), that's not what we're talking about here.

1. The main point of the summary was that they're trial versions, presumably trying to sell you the product/subscription. I don't believe hardly any Ubuntu programs are trying to sell you stuff (other than maybe Ubuntu One, if they're still doing that).

2. J Random Program on Ubuntu is probably easier to uninstall. Just "apt-get uninstall X".
