Submission + - Matter Colliding at the Speed of Light

CannonballHead writes:
Researchers have spent eight years constructing the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island in New York state. Its goal is to smash the nuclei of atoms together and study their wreckage to determine the fundamental properties of matter.
Apparently, there are fears about the smashing of two gold atoms together, fears about it creating strange particles that will engulf the entire earth, or creating a black hole that will suck the entire earth into itself in a few minutes. I knew money was powerful, but I didn't know gold was that influential.

Submission + - AMD Prices Through The Floor

mrneutron2004 writes: Looks like yet another gauntlet has been thrown down in the war between AMD and Intel. Across the board there are dramatic price drops on AMD X2 CPU's, with the X2 6000+ 3Ghz Dual Core tipping in as cheap as $229, and the low end X2 3600+ veritable pocket change at $73. http://www.fastsilicon.com/latest-news/amd-prices- through-the-floor.html?Itemid=60

Journal Journal: April Fool's Submissions Overboard and Underfunny 2

I agree with some of the comments and submissions I have seen today that the yearly stupidity on Slashdot is just plain dumb. Unfortunately, these comments are drowned out. One or two good hoaxes would have made my day. ("Google Paper" was actually quite good). A score of idiotic and unbelievable posts just ruins the site and real news is buried. Having looked through the Firehose at several points today, there have been several serious submissions that have been voted up but have never made

Submission + - RIAA Can't Have Defendant's Son's Desktop

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "The RIAA's attempt to get Ms. Lindor's son's desktop computer in UMG v. Lindor has been rejected by the Magistrate Judge. The judge said that the RIAA

"offered little more than speculation to support their request for an inspection of Mr. Raymond's desktop computer, based on ... his family relationship to the defendant, the proximity of his house to the defendant's house, and his determined defense of his mother in this case. That is not enough. On the record before me, plaintiffs have provided scant basis to authorize an inspection of Mr. Raymond's desktop computer."

Submission + - Xbox 360 Elite HDMI Uses v1.2

drunk pandas writes: "Loot Ninja reports that the Xbox 360 Elite will support HDMI 1.2, which means no Dolby Digital+ or TrueHD sound. It will support uncompressed Linear PCM, but only 2 channel. This sucks for people who want to get 5.1 channel uncompressed Linear PCM over HDMI from their HD-DVD drive. The PS3 does it, the 360 should too. Of equal or possibly better news, the Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard Update will see some VGA improvements as well. You'll now be able to select your video level, 7.5 IRE vs. 0, to get true 1080p from the VGA port. This excites me. No longer will we have washed out colors and such from the 360 with the VGA connection."

Submission + - Vista - Ubuntu Install Comparison

Cokeisbomb writes: "Andrew Thomas, at the Inqurier has recently installed both Vista and the latest version of Ubuntu on his desktop and has compared the install process and initial setup. Although he has been using computers for 30+ years, his findings were different than what many of us might expect. From the article: "Well, I've only been playing with computers since 1972 and I couldn't make it work. Linux can see the Windows boxes and vice versa, but any attempt to access files is met with a login dialogue box that refuses any username and password I enter. So I've done what any normal person would do in the circumstances — give up"."
