I remember during deeps of the recession in Chicago. Riding sharing wasn't a thing. Fuel was more expensive. The city authorized a 50 cent, then later a dollar fuel surcharge to every cab ride (flag pull). This lasted a few months but I remember checking whether it was still active or not. For several months well after it expired you would still see cabbies with the sign up in their cab.

I wouldn't say anything and if they tried to charge me that extra dollar I'd call them on it, and then say just because of that I'm using the credit card machine (right around then the cabs were getting retrofitted with a screen and card machine). Cabbies always HATED those machines. The ones before that were these little machines that twisted around but the cabbies would twist it back to the front seat and put duct tape over it. Those were always 'broken' 100% of the time.

Funny now a days most all cabbies welcome the business and don't give you any shit when you pay with a credit card but I digress.

If they argued with me for paying with a card or about the long expired dollar fuel surcharge I'd call 311 and report them.
